Hi,
It's been a while since I posted pics here and I was reminded that you might be ready for a few more So here are the next lot of pics, following on from the last ones taken at Tembe. From there we were back in Johannesburg for a few days, then headed off to the Tuli block in Botswana once again, back to our favourite place. Here are the pics from that trip, Easter 2006 and we were joined by a couple of friends too. http://www.chat-africa.co.za/upload/...2006/index.htm Enjoy ! ![]()

Brian,
Thanks for the brilliant pics as usual. This picture is a recent confrontation with a Rhino.....(from the safety of my Landy's cabin... dare I say). After awhile I felt uncomfortable and let the Landy roll.... From your knowlege, would you say the first Rhino was in a charging stance?

There are game ranches where if it is alive, you can hunt it. I don't know exactly where, but there are. A Dr. here in Midland got an elephant and it is in his house now, I bet that taxidermist liked that job.

DUDE, that video is sickening! I could almost understand primative people hunting like that...kinda....! I think anyone that would participate in that kind of hunting should have one of those spears shoved up there ass! That way they understand what the animal is going through while they are being BRUTALY SLAUGHTERED! Like those guys in the jeeps with ropes! They should be beaten with a rubber f-ing hose! Those guys are scum that should be wiped clean of the earth! I am not some animal activist or a vegetarian, I just cant stand people that are that CRUEL to animals! |

Dude, that vid is a montage of old footage. As for the ropes, how do you think that zebra in the local zoo got there long ago? Not as frightening to the zebra as having it's guts eaten out by a lion or hyena. The spear hunting footage is traditional hunting by indigeonous people, they don't have the option of buying their protein at the market on little plastic wrapped styrofoam trays. I'm sure the buffalo and hippo take a few of them down in the process too. The end show poachers shooting at the helicopter.
Sure the animal is in pain before dieing, but be careful about applying your own cultural mores to another cultures survival.

KevinNY, I agree with you on the primative people hunting like that. I still call InHumane on the guys in jeeps. I suppose since that is old footage, maybe there wasnt very eficient tranquilizers available. I will shut my mouth......

Not in a charging stance, no. It does look very nervous though and about to turn away and run. This would be typical for white rhino, they aren't aggressive usually. But they are all individuals If it had become more nervous, it would have turned very quickly away and pivoted right around to face you head on and you'd have seen it was "balanced" for fight or flight. A move towards from where you were may have triggered that and a possible charge if you still showed "agression" yourself.White rhinos tend to be gregarious and used to others around them, so they are quite docile unless you actually poke it with a sharp stick It's the black rhino that's the agressive one, a lot rarer and a bit smaller. But they are the dangerous one and give the rhino it's reputation as bad tempered and highly dangerous. Even they won't attack unless you come within 3 miles of them. You can tell which one's which easily, as they are exactly the same colour grey in the area you see them. The white rhino has that square mouth and is a grazer. The black rhino has a pointed upper lip and is a browser, usually solitary and likes it that way, so reacts quite agressively towards interlopers. Here's a black rhino ![]()

They're fine as long as you respect the distance And you have someone who has a little experience with you in remote places, or you simply are cautious when on your own driving around Kruger Park, for example. No problem and a great experience ![]()

Glad you like them No tourist pics, that's a remote place, but only 6 hours drive from where I live, best kept wildlife area secret we have, all the tourist areas are a long way away, this is our little place. But it does have the highest elephant population density in the world. Plus all the camps are bush camps, no fences around ! There are a lot of lion there too, but difficult to get a sighting. Many leopard and cheetah too. We'll see them there some time ![]()
