I've got the chance to pick up a 1971 Series 1 Jaguar XJ6 (with only 40k miles) for an extremely good price (it's almost free). The Body and interior are in great shape, however the engine needs a rebuild (blew a piston, f'd up the head). Rebuilding the engine is no problem, but locating a cylinder head of the proper vintage is looking to be somewhat difficult. Does anyone know if a later series 2 or 3 XJ6 head will work? What are my options here? I may end up picking the Jag up just because it's such a great deal and worry about the engine down the road.

I (my family) has a few jags. Well, not any that old.
I have seen a conversion to use a chevy small block. Not sure if it is still available but I have a feeling you can get more power out of it and the parts would cost less.

Any 4.2 head will work. Earlier 3.8 & 3.4 engines could swap heads. Jag engines are very stout, and very easy to work on but those Strombergs suck. My parents had XJs from the first year onward, and the SU engines on the '67 were best.
I have had a succession of MK2s, and have a '61 now, but know I'll never get to restoring it.
Terry is correct as far as I recall, also go to www.jaguarforums.com and chat up a guy that goes by JagTechOhio he has a shop and is the Paul Grant of Jags he may have what you need.

I must be nuts...it's looking like I'm going to get this car.
Hey Army...good to hear from you. Thanks for the info and keep up the good work. Stay safe...As best you can anyway...remember: SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
Xtreme: Thanks for the link...I'll check it out.
TerryS: That's what I've been finding. Also looks like later S3 4.2 heads offer a slight performance upgrade with bigger valves and a little more aggressive cams.
mbrummal: I thought about swapping for about 2 seconds...but then it wouldn't be a Jag. Besides have you heard the sweet, sweet music a nice Jag 4.2 makes....ahhhhhhh!
