Default Aviation Stuff Not for the Queasy people

well not all is gross.
some i was there personaly
some came through the Airport Grapevine.
some is (im sure) googleable.

But i will start with
Catastrophic Engine Failure on a ground run with a 767.
The engine failed a turbine disc during run up.
When the disc exploded out the side of the engine it went through the wing starting the fire and also across to the other engine embedding itself in the cowlings.

Default Stowaway

This was South African Airways
I was there for this arrival.
As he approached JFK and let his landing gear down a leg fell out and landed in someones yard.
This individual boarded in Dakar on route to NYC from RSA.
SAD-- he got all dressed in new jeans and sneakers.
on takeoff he fell out and was hanging on with his legs in the landing gear and his body hanging out.the gear retracted and squeezed his legs in.
he was hanging in the airstream getting beatin against the side of the a/c untill he disintegrated.body parts and juice were streaming up the windows.
his head damaged the flaps and pieces of his skull were imbedded in the composite material.

The captain made a log book write up of----severe vibration for first two hours of flt then disapated please rectifiy.

just horrible. Things HAVE to be bad elsewhere to drive a person to attempt things like this.

I hope this was a stowaway and not standard practice of SAA to make people fly inside the wings because of limited seating. That would be a heck of a lawsuit if they didn't install proper seat belts. Not to mention what did he think he was going to be breathing at 30,000 feet.

So Jim, how close was too close during a high power run?! How far away will a turbine suck you in??

My father served in the RAF as ground crew in the 1950's and early 1960's, he tells tales of people and airplanes not mixing both propellor and jet engine encounters but one of the more lurid tales is being made to walk across the Salisbury Plain after a parachute regiment exercise with a long flag pole and a potato sack.

Flag pole marked the impact point and the potato sack was used to house the remains of trooper whose chute had failed to open and with full pack and body weight had been reduced to less than 3 foot long and only thing holding his body together would be his uniform. dad said the chute failure rate would be somewhere between 3 and 12 depending on size of the exercise being held.
