Default BMW's

OK I have a chance to look at 2 BMW 8 series:

1) 1992 six-speed

2) 1997 automatic

I dont have much more info on then other then they are also low mileage cars and have lots of records. A friend has access to both cars which are owned by a BMW nut.

Question is does anybody on here know anything about this model BMW?? Whats good/bad certain things to look for or to look out for??

I love the way they look and have thought about getting one in the past, but never went forward with the thought, but now have a chance to take a look at these two.

R u talking 840 or 850?

I've had both in the automatic version.

a 97 ( last year ) 850 ..a beast.. but not a car that likes to be driven slowly, in other words, if you are willing to be pulled over, then it is a great car. A tad rough iddle , understandable on a 12cyl ( not as bad as Lambos but rougher than SL600 )

a 95 840, this was a superb car, very nice for an all around car, fast, peppy, and easy as a DD.

Check for front end issues, very prominent on both models as well as the cooling system. Both of my cars has radiator issues ( fixed by warranty ), also check the AC/Heat quite expensive to fix.

Hope this helps you and Good Luck with your selection.

I will add that if it's the 4.0 v8 in the 92 that they had issues with the niksal(sp) engines.

Other than that Rugbier, hit it on the head though if it's the v12 be prepared. I had by the grace of God a chance to experience one of those in 97 on the Autobahn. It will cause a pucker factor with flat out speed and agility. That car is sex with a shifter and tires. They are a pain to work on and parts are expensive. If they are both v12's though I would highly recommend the 6 speed, you'll not regret it other than your cheeks hurting from the grin.

Also I'll hate you for the rest of my days if you have that and your mustang....

Both cars are 850's and both have the 12cyl in them.

Rugbier -- there is a 97 and a 92 available not a 95. Is there a difference between them??? Option wise/engine wise (between the 92 and 97)??

I love the thought of a 6-speed, but it is 5 years older then the 97

Bill, Wait till you see the Stang come springtime. I have the engine out right now and rebuilding it. Going to do a mild build up on it. I could get a 302 for it, but I like the thought of having the original engine in it (hi-po 289). Hmmmm the BMW would look nice sitting next to the Stang now that you mention it

The 840 is a v8 4.0 or 4.4 liter if I remember correctly. The 850 is 5.0 liters of pure v12 muscle.

No much difference at all on the 92 and 97 ( except lights but hard to see ), the interior on the 97 some had piping ( mine did ) and the wheels in 97 there was the optional BBS and the Brembo brakes ( again optional ). Wheel size, HP

The BIG difference will be if it is a 850 CSI instead of a 850 CI or 850 CIA.

The easy way to tell the difference is the Price tag ( 50K+ )

The CSI had wider body, wheels, an M engine amongst few.

Again, I don't know if you are going to use it as a casual driver, but the clutch tends to be a PITA if in slow traffic ( hard clutch like 911T, Lambos, Ferrari etc ).

I loved, ABSOLUTELY loved my automatic, and playing with the gears is just as fun.

I am told that they are csi's and they are owned by a BMW collector. Not going to be used as a daily driver, more of a weekend play toy and maybe make a trip to work here and there on nice days.

ARMY .....Don't be sad,

There is close to 20K price difference between them ( the cost of a nice 308GTS ) ,come to think of it, and if memory serves there is absolutely NO AUTOMATIC CSI. I remember when I bought my 97, the dealer was very passionate about it ( OPEN ROAD BMW - Edison NJ ).

APTBPETEY, please becareful as there are NO AUTOMATIC CSI, and I am almost positive they stopped them in 96 ( maybe a late production came as 97 ).

It is quite easy to slap the Motorsport cover on the engine, swap the fenders/spoilers and the exhaust.
I will verify with BMWNA or BMWCCA the VIN, but my guts tells me NO WAY the 97 is a CSI.
I have friends in low low places *LMAO* kidding, I have friends that will verify the VIN for you if you get it.

Okay I am going to look at the cars tomorrow. I talked to the owner and he said that the 97 is a ci version not a csi. He stated they did make a csi version up to the early 1997 versions for the US and up till 1999 for Europe versions.

The other one is a csi though.

So I guess we'll see whats up after this weekend.
