Solar-Powered Trash Cans Work When Crews Don't

POSTED: 10:13 am EDT October 4, 2006

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A trash can costing $4,500 may sound like a lot, even if it is solar powered.

But officials in Santa Cruz insist they're not throwing the taxpayers' money away.

The BigBelly trash can is able to put the squeeze on garbage. It compacts trash to one-tenth of its size, allowing the receptacle hold more pizza boxes and coffee cups.

Officials said the mailbox-sized BigBelly earns its keep on weekends when city crews are off duty.

Santa Cruz plans to buy four BigBellies to keep the downtown area a little cleaner.

4500 bucks per trash can...Theres our typical government spending....

I beg to differ, the units need emptying 10 times less often and are intended to message central dispatch when they are full. For sure it costs money to empty them and reducing this overhead by a factor of 10 on busy locations probably pays for it's self quite quickly.

Not bad...I say SC uses them to dispose of and compact a few of those hundreds of tree huggers I ran into while there a couple years ago.

I hope they charge the people ten times less in their monthly bill!
