I will be driving up the Ca.Coast to Humboldt County... Have done the drive a few times but just curious if there are any must see's... Secret little gems out there.
Any epic camping spots or MTB trails would be great... Thanks

I will be leaving LA at 5am Friday... Would be stoked to get a MTB ride in before SFO or a good hike... Looking to camp out near Sea Ranch or somewhere abouts...

No matter where you go i think that may be one of the most beautiful drives...When i was out west a few years back we drove a very long way up Highway 1 and it was magnificent.

Are you driving straight through to Humboldt Co. from LA via hwy 1 or 101 or a combination? If you've got the time, there are numerous places to mtb along the way. Here are some spots that are close to the coast: Toro Park in Monterey Co. (near Laguna Seca) has good terrain if you like sandy, undulating stuff; in Santa Cruz is Wilder Ranch (right off hwy 1) - the good stuff is actually outside of but adjacent to Wilder in Gray Whale Ranch and UCSC (most of these trails are illegal, but you're probably fast enough to avoid the rangers); there is also good riding near the junctions of Hwy 9 and Skyline Blvd.; Marin Co. is loaded (on and around Mt. Tamalpais).
Sightseeing: Gotta stop in Big Sur; Point Lobos is nice for a quick hike with awesome ocean views and diving; Carmel is awesome for golf, shopping and eating, you could stop at the Highlands Inn which has an awesome bar overlooking the ocean; Santa Cruz is eclectic - the strip on Pacific Ave. is nice with restaurants and bars (and panhandlers and wannabe hippies); and so on. More specifics, let me know. Btw, it appeared from the smugglersite link you sent a while back that you have done some ad work for Nike. Do you happen to know a guy named Mike Byrne? |

Oh, if you wanna a great place to stay for a night or two, you can rent homes in Sea Ranch. I have the contact info. If you're gonna camp, you will pass numerous small oceanside campgrounds all around this area.

No... don't Know Mike Byrne... I will be up the 1 mostly all the way. I have done the drive, but never really had the time to go for a ride so looking forward to it.

Griff-
So hit the coast all the way up went for an amazing bike ride just north San Louis Obispo... Then caught a great hiking trail just north of Julia Pheifer State Park had dinner in Santa Cruz and punched all the way up to Mendecino for some sleep time... Great trip thanks for the info... Next time when I have more time you can show me some of the sites right ther in SC, I know there are some gems...
