I am Trevor Hitchin of Boise, Idaho US and have now spent over 100 hrs troubleshooting the ED problem with my '96 LR-RR 4.0 and was lucky enough to have been on well lit city streets the last time my "Engine Disabled" light turned my vehicle into a 5,000 lb paperweight for the last time. It has locked up over a dozen times and the last time was at Family Dollar and sat there for days... ironic and was a picture (sign) of the times.
I am intiating a Class Action Lawsuit against Land Rover North America and am wondering if anyone else feels a bit "cheated" out of thier vehicle? I have discussed this with LR NA and they have sent me a denial letter, stating my 139,000 mile vehicle is well outside of warranty. I am asking them to replace my paperweight with one I can drive and that realistically the car was good for another 100,000 miles maybe more since I had to replace the air suspension with the "analogue" coil springs. My position is that this is not an issue that would have even surfaced until well past the warranty - when the battery / alternator / remote key went out, not before...
I know there are others with this problem who are fed up too. My alternator went out along with the battery and well, pushing my paperweight down the street is not the Range Rover experience I signed up for.... as well, I believe we LR owners agree to pay more for parts and service BECAUSE the cars are meant to last. I believe this problem is primarily for '96 & '97 Rangies and is a design flaw, a known issue without a recall notice.
I love my vehicle so much that I am willing to fight, in court, to help Land Rover take these types of engineering flaws seriously. Thank God I was not on the Serengetti when this happened as there you become a link on the foodchain and not at the 'top' so to speak-for me it has been a recurring problem and am now totally fed up.
I welcome your support and if you are as frustrated as I am, please contact me asap. I will handle all paperwork, just looking for others to help in my pursuit of a fair resolution.
Respectfully
Trevor Hitchin

Does that mean I can jump in and try to sue for the timing chain that crapped out on my 1972 Series as well, if so, let me know, I will be right there with you. Even know a couple of Lawyers that might be able to help......

Thanks for the suggestions and well, low and behold there was a banana in the tailpipe afterall, and no, it was not an OEM 'nanner' and this was the source of the trouble...and it clearly states in the pompous green-fake leather manual that only Original Land Rover Bananas should be used as most LR owners, well, prefer the real deal??? You know who you are........ I have seen you driving your newly 'leased - not owned' vehicles, with your Barby wives/girlfriends in the passenger seat who, we both know, are just a front for your real preferences...as Republican and queer as they are. Our Senator Larry Craig was probably picked up in one of these cars after getting arrested for his foot-tapping bathroom scandal. Wasn't he just listening to his ipod and "tapping" to the beat? Life is so unfair.....
Whoever listed this "banana thing" surely remembers when Eddy got thrown through the glass and told the arriving LAPD Officers not to worry, that he can describe all of them (the four goons) and the cops turn and place him in cuffs for "running through the building and leaping out the glass window.........." that is how I felt after *&%ing around with a security system on my ride for hours/days/weeks. I am locked out of my own vehicle......... wtf!!?
As well, I am not seeking a new ride as I clearly can no longer afford membership in your elitist car-club. I just want another 100,000 miles of SUV so I can bounce up and down the Sawtooths without being affraid of having to push it home, you know, like the advertisement says "go where no cars can go - with confidence".
If I wanted 139,000 miles from a ride that cost ($80,000) I would have bought a Ford and put the other $50k in a "stick it to LR" fund that would accumulate enough cash (over the life of the vehicle) to pay for a lifetime of rentals - so that I could go deer hunting at will and without concern.
Oh and I would suspect most of the wisecracks are coming from LR owners who have no idea that the vehicle even has 4-wheel drive - and no, the 405 freeway does not count as "jungle terrain" even though you are stuck breathing the tailpipes of 15 million other bozos stuck on your treadmills and going nowhere.
I won't even comment on the "sumthin' for nothing" and "DB" comments...... but will say that after a $4k shock-job, and a $3k "tune up", I would expect this vehicle to perfrom another 10 yrs. As it stands, if anyone needs parts from a '96, you can have first pickin's.... Pay for shipping of course.
For the record, the AC hasn't come on in 5 years, the sunroof crapped out many miles ago, the paint has faded, the leather is cracked, the door on the passenger side won't lock, most of the power is GONE, the airbag "might" deploy, and the gd "Engine Disabled" light won't let me start it. Other than that it is a great ride. Land Rover will continue to make garbage so long as there are idiots like yourselves willing to pay a premium for a totally inferior driving experience... I guess the saying is, "if it's made in the UK, it's CRAP!"
I plan on going back to my ol reliable '73 Ford 250. Looks like a Sanford and Son set prop but f-it, it runs and runs well. More than I can say for my paperweight.
Really though, thanks for your comments, all I need is one other 'sucker' to make my claim CA.
PS - I asked my Mom like you said and she came back with:
Good luck on you class action suit, the only one getting anything from it is the lawyer laughing behind your back.
Sorry we didn't bow down to you on your first post, if only we had known what an adventurer you truly are!
Yes, you are right, none of us that responded knew that we had four wheel drive, hell, I had to google it to even know what the heck it is!
You paid 80k for a 55k vehicle? Chump.

It's not like I am going to do this without asking my mom first.
That picture of yours reminds me of what I wanted to do when a band full of teeny-boppers were laughing at me on the highway when my "superior" air-shocks went out. I had to laugh with them as it gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "bumppin" down the road. Ever been a Land Rover with -zero- suspension??? It is a hoot but don't push it over 20 mph without a helmet on and watch out for sppedbumps and lane markers, it can get wild.
And yes, most Rangies have 4x4, it is activated with the other handle that shows an icon of a suv going up and down, there are many settings for many types of situations. There should be an incon with a 'gun in mouth' for when your Engine Disabled light comes on....

if you want, i'll just give you a gun instead of an icon and you can take care of yourself before you waste a judge's time with this lawsuit.
