BBC NEWS | UK | Scotland | Highlands and Islands | Driver rescued from cliff plunge

Driver rescued from cliff plunge
Crash scene
The driver was airlifted to hospital in Inverness

A driver has been airlifted to hospital after his car went over the edge of a cliff and rolled 120ft onto the beach below.

Police said the incident happened in a remote part of north west Sutherland at Ceannabeinne, two miles from Durness.

Stornoway Coastguard helicopter was sent to the scene and the man was flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Northern Constabulary said the 60-year-old man's injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Officers said the man was conscious during his rescue from the wreckage and inquiries into the crash were ongoing.

yep, everyone in that car would have survived had it been full of people. they woulda been bruised, possibly broken, but alive. i don't know how many vehicles can roll down a 120ft cliff face and everyone can get out of the vehicle without critical injuries.

it looks like the passengers in the 3rd row seat would have been badly injured or killed if there was anybody sitting there.

All those doors were opened normally, without extraction tools. That says a lot about structural integrity and the rigidity of the chassis platform.
Every person I know that has totaled a Rover buys another Rover simply because of how well the vehicle protected its occupants.

There's no way that truck "rolled" down the cliff. Cartwheeled? Most likely.

It's still impressive that the passenger compartment is that clean.
