its like a full on commercial linux. You can run it full GUI.. no typing necessary, but its a real linux. It is free for individuals, donated to the needy and fully supported, online and live. I've used commercial unix builds, redhat, solaris.. mandrake.. etc.. Ubuntu beats them hands down for GUI interface and install. BUT.. you can make it as hands on as you want.

Its has an auto installer and a working dual boot engine. Download the iso for your processor set.. from old G4/g5 processors to current intel chip sets.. burn it to disk boot from cd and install. Plug and play.. stable as hell.

ONLY drawback ONLY ONLY ONLY.. is the lack of support by some major hardware companies such as ATI/Radeon.

While you're at it.. download open office and kick Microsoft out of your life.

If you're buying microsoft office products.. you're likely wasting your money. I've never had any compatibility issues. I probably know what i'm doing a bit more than most. But i'm no guru at the stuff.

I prefer OpenSUSE over Ubuntu.

It must be a very very specific reason. Like.. you just don't like the logo or something.
Some linux guys are so brand loyal.

Well I have a old IBM T20 system that I installed kunbuntu on today. So far it works amazingly well except for the usb wireless device. I have yet to figure that one out as it won't accept the install cd at all lol. I tried a usb mouse to make sure the usb port worked and it does. Just can't seem to get it working.

It's a us robotics 5422 usb wireless.

Check the forums. I had a similar problem.. It was a funky motherboard. Wasn't all that compatible. I couldn't use my wifi at the same time as something like my usb port or something.
You might try a different version.. you know.. back one or 2 from the latest. Sometimes they're a bit smoother.. especially since you're running older hardware.

give the Ubuntu forums a thorough going over. That's one of the better things about Ubuntu. The support is really, really good.

Linux works much differently than Windows and it takes some getting used to when it comes to drivers and such. Not too difficult though.

Chris you've met me so you know that I'm not that bright lol.

I found some information on the very usb card I'm getting my butt handed to me by and it gave some crazy directions on how to get the drivers to work so I'm trying to work that now. I might just go buy a card tonight that is supposed to work from the get go lol.

I think I'm going to do it as well on my good lap top but I'm going to keep it a dual boot system.

You realize with Ubuntu, you can just pop the CD in and run from that without installing to get a feel for it before you commit to it.

Well.. with very limited functionality...
Actually from what I remember.. It forces a "gui" install doesn't it?

you load up the disk.. go to the desk top and answer a box or click an Icon to start the install process.. opens up a partitioner.. etc.

I was going to install ubuntu on my tablet.. but figured I wouldn't have the handwriting recognition.. so it would be a lot less usable..

I saw that Chris but this was a old lap top that I hadn't used in 8 months so I figured I had nothing to lose on it lol. It's a old IBM T20 pent III 750mhz. So far the only problem is figuring out the wireless so no biggie.

Tonight I think I might clean up the HD on the other lap top and give it a go.

Is this the same laptop you were going to try and turn into a hackintosh? I highly doubt it would have worked on that old of a machine.
