Truthfully? Any gun is a good one if you know how to use it properly.
I'm not a "caliber snob" as I have a .380 I can empty a 7 rnd magazine in a 6" circle in five seconds at 7-10yards. If you're not proficient with a handgun, a 12gauge pump w/18" barrel (Mossberg, 500, Remington 870, Daly). are good for SHTF or home defense and extremely VIABLE!! Remember though, you STILL have to aim a shotty though!
I prefer the SKS carbine for medium range shooting under 300 yards. 7.62X39 ammo is cheap and plentiful. AR, Kel-Tec SU16 and most other semi-autos in .223 or 5.56 NATO are extremely viable. I personally don't like the Mini-14 as they tend to be pricey and inaccurate. Others like them just fine.
And a 7.62 NATO or .30-06 bolt action for those "reach out and touch someone" scenarios.
How about the "supremely viable" Ruger 10/22, Marlin 795 or Marlin 66 in. 22lr.
Lets, here more!
