Default 1995 RR SE...Strange question!!!

First off I'm new here so Hi to all. I just bought my first rover this year and I love it (well not so much right now). So I got a 1995 Range Rover SE. I just drove home from work, put the car in park, turned off the ignition... and it won't give me back my key!!! Look down and the gear indicator shows R though the transmission is definitely in Park. I turned it on moved the shifter back and forth several times and couldn't get that indicator to move to park! WTF is going on? I've been driving for 15 years and I have never seen anything like this before. I don't even know where to begin on this one. Please help!!! Luckily I've got an extra key and can lock the doors from the outside but it refuses to give me the key in the ignition.

Anyone ever seen this before???? Or am I just that darn unlucky to be the first?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Robert

Wow. I've seen this before only when the vehicle refuses to go into park. Maybe there is a solenoid lockout, that the shifter isn't touching. If it's far enough back to still show "R" on the display, maybe it's not indicating that it's in park. Just one of the wonderful things that keep people from buying 1st model years of anything. Hope it's an easy and cheap fix. Good luck.

You will probably need to have a mechanic go into the steering column and fix/replace the steering lock assembly.
In the future post this under the R.R. section so you get more feed back.

The XYZ switch has most likely failed.

It's expensive but you need it.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong spot. I was hoping it was more of a generic problem than a RR specific.

And PT... the XYZ switch isn't that expensive nor do I need it

How do you know that the reason your truck won't give up the key is not due to the XYZ switch having failed and the interlock solenoid not letting go?

You seem pretty confident yet what you posted points me in the direction of a bad or misadjusted XYZ switch.

A list price of more than $500 is expensive in my world, but clearly, I do not live in your world.
