My land rover quit running while I was driving it...the check engine light came on instantly...i pulled over, got a tow home and let it sit over nite...it started right up the next morning...drove it for about 5 miles and the same thing happened...any ideas? I would greatly appreciate it
First, post your Discovery questions in the Discovery section, you'll have more exposer.
Is your check engine light on full time?

Well, Let's see:
1. CEL came on INSTANTLY !
2. Pulled over.
3. Over night
4. Started right up, you jumped right back in it and drove 5 miles, probably without even popping the bonnet.
Given the rather complete list of clues, I'd say It's broken.
Damn; that was harsh. But truthful. What did you see when you checked under the hood the next morning? Fluid levels? Colors? DI - did you check the distributor cap, the wires, anything leaking under the truck? Did you check anything? Or just start it up and say to yourself " Oh, it started, everything must be fine..."

I had the same problem three days ago. I was driving my Disco II and the "M" and "S" started flashing on the dashboard. All of a sudden, the car lost power and came to stop -- would not start. I waited about an hour and tried starting it. It came on. I drove home -- ten minutes away. I have tried starting it since then and it would not come on -- cranking but not turning over. I replaced the battery and terminals. Still no good. These cars are just problematic. I dont know what to do at this point.
M/S are flashing, most likely because of a loose or dirty battery cable or a near dead battery, check that first including a battery/alternator test at your local car parts store. If you are still having a problem, I would think the crank sensor is failing.

Hey DiscoMike. Thanks. I tried the new battery with new terminals. Still no luck. More than likely the cranck sensor. That will be my weekend project. Can't wait to get back on my disco. Miss it so much this week. This is my second Disco. Had a '96 Disco that had an electrical fire. This one (99 Disco II) is the replacement. As much as it gives me heartache (recently replaced intake manifold, waterpump before that etc, etc.), I am still an addict and can't stay away from rovers. Thanks a bunch.
Because I drive a 99 DII, I have a million questions....
