Default Anti-4x4 lot at it again! (a rant)

Last month Greenpeace shut down the Disco 3 production line by a gang of them chaining themselves to it (they said they wanted to stop Range Rover production, but obviously didn't notice they got the wrong vehicle).

This got me slightly annoyed (as most of this inaccurate anti-4x4 stuff does).

Then, last week something else happened. A friend of my sister, who is living with us for a while, is a member of Greenpeace. She doesn't care about 4x4s, more their original aims of saving whales and rainforests. Anyway, in the post she got a parcel containing a whole lot of anti-4x4 posters, pamphelts and windscreen tickets.

The instructions that came with them said that the mock road-signs saying 'No 4x4s', with a picture of a Disco crossed out, were to be put up on the roadside in urban areas, being careful not to obscure existing road signs. No problem (from a legal view) there.

More worryingly, there was a mock Land Rover re-call notice. It says 'To Owners of Range Rovers and Discoveries' (despite having a Freelander on the front), and comes complete with LR logo and the same font/layout as all the official LR material. These say that Discos/RRs 'leave the factory with an in-built flaw', which is that they are killing the planet. These notices were to be put inside motoring magazines in newsagents. I'm sure this is illegal in many ways.

Finally there was a huge bundle of yellow/black notices to go under the windscreen wipers of any 4x4 found on the street, saying 'This vehicle is causing climate change, please change it for a more suitable vehicle'. Putting stuff under windscreen wipers is illegal.

I hope, being Greenpeace, that all this paper was recycled, or their arguments start to look very weak. The whole package weighed a good few pounds, which must have produced a few clouds of C02 to deliver.

I'm getting FED UP with these people saying that just because I happen to drive a vehicle with two driven axles that I am killing us all. These people are seriously suggesting I pay £1000 a year for my 4x4's road tax (£170 being the norm), and that diesel goes up to £1.20 a litre (currently at about 92p, having risen sharply in the past few months from around 80p).

I e-mailed them and they sent back a standard reply telling me that I should use public transport. THERE IS NO PUBLIC TRANSPORT (worth speaking of) WHERE I LIVE. Many of these enviromentalists seem to assume that we're all driving cars (and Land Rovers, out here in the countryside) just to really annoy everyone and selfishly damage the enviroment.

The problem is, the present government always sides with the enviromentalists. It gets very few votes outside urban areas (where many of the anti-4x4 lobby are based), and so follows their lead (and lets the countryside go stuff itself so it can build houses on it, it sometimes seems). The EU (curse it) sides with the enviromentalists (unless the French or German industries will suffer) and supports mega fuel and tax price rises for 4x4s.

What happend to the freedom of the individual to do what they want providing it didn't hurt anyone else (the principle I was taught was at the heart of Western democracy).

Sorry for the long, wandering rant against a lot of things, but I had to let off steam somehow!

Jack (now calmed down a bit)

I hear ya bud! While you have to worry about the Greenies, we worry about rising petrol prices and wake up every morning wishing our Landies were TDIs

i'd like to see greenpeace drive honda insights through the backwoods, which occassionally is actually necessary when you don't have a job in a posh office in some big building. on a lighter note, my dad's side of the family is in the forestry business, and the name of the company changed a few years ago so they had tons of extra monogramed paper with the old name on top. my dad stocked the printer with it, and i unknowingly printed out a science paper for my very environmentalist earth science teacher on this paper. i know she enjoyed grading that paper. there is nothing wrong with protecting the environment, but you shouldnt be able to persecute people for doing what you think destroys the environment. in reality, people stick to trails that are already made most of the time, seeing as trees are kind of difficult to get around when they're 5 feet apart. and ha...at least they're targeting the right 4x4's by going into urban areas. quite a few of those owners are the soccer moms that could do with a minivan.

You really do have more than your share of Do-gooders over there. When they banned Hunting, I could only think WTF? next it will be the shooting sports (VERY close) and fishing afterthat.

Since she's a guest of your sister, I supose you can't throw her boney, narrow minded ass out, but I would make it my personal quest to make her life so freakin miserable, she'd be beggin to leave. I can't wait for the next Greenie to wander up my drive looking for donations, but I suppose I wasting my time, since my name has probably gotten on their "do not visit" list from the last ones who tried. The bore of a 10mm S&W looks really big when it's only a foot in front of your nose.

What's happened in UK over the years with guns, with hunting, with trails, etc etc,,, should serve as a clear warning to us over here. There is no room for 1/2 measures, for passive support of our heritage. In the absence of a strong & unbreakable front by US, WE too will fall victim to these groups.

Support your local club, support your NRA, do not be intimidated or talked down to. Do not allow our heritage to be lost on our watch.

You should take your friends sister out with your family on a fun 4Wd packed picnic in the country. Show her how much fun Land Rovers really are.
Dont talk much. Just drive and wheel your way to her heart.

Then she might get over green peace and join a real club, like LRO

Why not use a carrot instead of a stick? If not, then have a wee fun (kudos to Engineer Scotty from StarTrek).

When I was real immature, If I wanted to get the goat of someone, I would just go to the naughty section of the newsstand , get all the bingo cards, put the targets' name on the card, hit the "Bill me" button, and post them.

If I am adjacent over the next couple of days, I would like to see their faces when they received great unwanted collections of porn magazines or "sport" rags.

Maybe if you see one of these beartraps, photograph the scene and the toy for future reference and evidenece collection, bring some air, a powertool and a cutter, remove the points and then leave their defanged toy back where you found.

The bad thing: you are destroying evidence for the authorities. The good thing: nuts like this always go back to the scene of the crime.

Install something like a noisemaker that works when exposed to air in there or some concrete anchorages and make them work to inspect the toy.

Another thing is plant a motion operated cam and have it photograph everything that goes near it. Use a digicam, and after a few days, you will see your offending wildlife and then you can post your photos to the local constable, the local paper or their "friends". They will be all very interested.
