Default BMW Motors in Land Rovers?

I have a friend who owns a used car lot and I was telling him am in the market for Mid-90's Land Rover Rangie or Disco. In the phone call he says that these years have a BMW V8 motor. While Im not a huge BMW fan, I do accept their design, power, etc.

So is he right?

In the US....not in the mid 90's and never in a disco.
only the RR in the 2002? to 2005 model years had a BMW engine.

What a coincidence....A co-worker of mine was asking me about my D90 this morning and he said the exact same thing about the mid 90's Rangie and Disco.....I had never heard that before

After 98' when BMW took ownership There were alot of BMW products in Landy's..The TD5 is a Beemer motor. It was in everything from Defender to Discovery. The TD4 was in the freelander here in the UK. The Petrol engines were made by Rover motor group.
Pre 98' there were no BMW products in the trucks other than the Air Bag and Anti-Lock brake technology.

All V8 Land Rovers, including Range Rovers, used the Rover V8 up until the Series III Range Rover, launched under Ford ownership in 2001, but with BMW V8 as it was already a long way down the development stage and was ready for production. This is the only model to have a BMW V8. Only from 2001 to 2004/5

All Discovery I and II V8s are Rover, only the Disco3/LR3 has a Jaguar V8.

All Defender V8s are Rover.

Some interesting things too, the TD5 is often referred to as a "BMW" engine, as it was introduced during their ownership, but it's a Rover engine through and through.

LR had developed a new line of diesel engines, sharing major components, that could be produced in 4,5 and 6 cylinder variants, all common rail and high tech and all turbocharged. They would be 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 litres swept volume respectively, depending on the number of cylinders. The 300TDi engine also was developed further at the same time. As BMW got to grips with ownership, the TD4 was passed for the Freelander, as it was already in production in the Rover saloons, where the transmission was also sourced, a developed package so close to production was better than starting over with the BMW 2.0 diesel. So the Freelander got the go ahead, with the Rover TD4, except it was called the TD only.

The 6 cylinder version was stopped there and then, as BMW already had a suitable engine, and this (BMW) engine became the TD6 in the new Range Rover.

BMW did not have then, or now, a suitable 5cyl engine, or anything else close, so the TD5 got the green light and went into production for the Disco II and the Defender.

In 2001, the Freelander was face lifted and this included sorting out the IRD and associated problems, along with the BMW TD4 engine (BMW developed and not the original envisaged TD4 from the TD5 family) The Rover TD was dropped.

In South Africa, when the Rover V8 was dropped in the Defender, the BMW 2.8 litre 6 cylinder petrol engine from the 328i was available in 90 and 110 station wagons and pickups. Short lived, but very popular. It was badged as the 2.8i This version was not sold anywhere else in the world, as far as I know. It had the R380 gearbox. Not made under Ford ownership.

That's all the BMW engines in Land Rovers.

The TD4 BMW engined Freelander is still in production for Europe and South Africa, possibly Australia too, but will be replaced in the new Freelander with a Ford unit.

By the way, the 300TDi, although developed as a potential alternative to the TD5, was dropped, but the tooling sold on to International in Brazil, who developed the 2.8 powerstroke engine from it, which is so popular as a conversion for all diesel Defenders and Discoverys, as it bolts straight in, using the same engine mounts.

Regards,
Brian
