Default To buy or not to buy...

I'm considering purchasing a 2003 Disco II SE from a private seller here in IL. The vehicle has 84,000 miles and is in pristine cosmetic condition. However, I ran the CARFAX report when I got home from driving it and found that the vehicle was a "Manufacturer's Buyback" in California twice in 2006. On the flipside, the truck was driven another 43,000 miles after the buyback's. The seller is a Rover technician and have completely overhauled the mechanics and installed greaseable parts in the drive train. I can pick it up for $9,500 and very much want to buy it but this will be my primary vehicle (no commute) and need it to be fairly dependable. Suggestions?

So you are not aware of the engine failure list Rover has on the 03's for a failing oil pump.
I can't think of one reason you would want a buy back that may also have a possible bad engine, especially for $9500.
It was a buy back for a reason and will always be a problem.
By the way, 03's are selling for $7000 plus in most areas.
Stay away from it.

So, should I stay away from all '03 Discos or just that one in particular?

Some 03's are fine.

But I would go with a 99 D2 or a 04 D2.

Have you checked its engine. it is in good condition or not.If engine is not good there is no use of buying it.
