A friend of mine is trying to decide between two cars and doesn't know much about differences between model years and values. There are two that she likes, and these prices are the final negotiated private seller prices:
1999 DII SE with 95K miles for $8K. One known issue is one of the rear doors needs to have an actuator replaced I think, as it sometimes doesn't open from the outside. 2000 DII SD (or non-SE, whichever the designation of one without jumpseats) for $11K. This one has 60K miles, a manufacturers warranty until July, roof rack, ladder, cold weather package, descent control, 18" wheels, leather and suede interior, factory brush guard, burlwood kit, and was only driven winters. She really likes the idea of jumpseats and it looks like those can't easily be added to a 2000, but if the 2000 is a much better deal, given that it's still under warranty and has low miles, she'll consider that car. Can I get some opinions here on what people would do. She'll either keep it forever or sell it after 3 or 4 years. |

I'm still a noob to Land Rovers, but the 2000 sounds like an SE with having all those options, just not an SE7. With only 60k and all the extras I would much rather have that one for 3K more. What color are these?

On the 99, the rear door problem is common and just needs to be cleaned, no expense as such.
On the 2000, it is out of factory warranty, who's warranty is included? I own a 99 and love it and not knowing what options are on it, it is hard to compare them. Mike |

2000.
Just think how much all that extra stuff will cost to buy and put on the 1999. |

The resale of a lower miled car will usually always be better. How many miles a year will you put on it? I drive a mile to work, so I can get a higher milage vehice and offset the high miles I put on it. You can always get a roof rack ($1000>) on any vehicle and everyone here told me to get a real front bumper and guard, not the factory brush one. The burlwood is only one strip above the clove box and you can get the whole dash kit on ebay for $100 or so. The descent is for some decent off-roading and I'm not sure what the cold weather package has, if it's only the heated front winshield I'd rather not have it, mine has a weird glare at night.
With only 60k on the 2000 I would rather have that for the extra $3k and you still get the nicer features than what the 99 has.

If there are any kids 10 and under that will be frequently riding in the truck, the jump seats rock. If the passengers are all out of grade school, the jump seats are useless and only take up some of your storage space.
When I had my 2000 Disco SE7 my (then) 8 year old and his 7 year old cousin loved sitting all the way in the back. But hauling kids is about all they are good for.

i just bought a 2000 Se about 2 months ago. It has 60k on it. All of the options you have on the 2000 came with mine minus the accesories. I thought i got a pretty good deal on it, and im very happy with it. I've owned alot of really nice cars, but my Disco puts them all to shame. It sounds like you are getting one hell of a deal if it is in good shape. I bought mine from a dealership (a mistake, i know.) but the 2000 sounds like a better option. However, i get free rental cars from the dealership for the life of my car. (No good, because im moving to Alaska in September.) Just my opinion. Im trying to put a brush guard/roof rack/ladder on mine, and its going to run me about 1500, and thats if i purchase the parts used. If you dont get it, let me know....

$11,000 for a 2000 with 60k might seem like a good price in some parts of the country, and it looks like everyone is rooting for that, so I'm mystified why I'm the only one who thinks $500 more for an '02 is even better. the extra 14K means nothing.
