Default the cost of diagnosis will go up

actually its not land rover's fault but the federal govt's ruling. as of 2008 all vehicles need to run CAN BUS protocals for diagnosis.

that means a really expensive computer to look up codes. no more simple code readers.

it sucks for us cause we cant hook up really quick and get rid of codes.

Land rover started in 2005 with the LR3 and alot of other manufacturers have already started using the can bus protocols.

your local shops will have to pay or else stick to the older stuff.

thats not bad but then you have the costs of maintenaining their equipment and getting any updates or fixes.

trust me, our testbook machines are already showing their age and not always cooperating or even working. Computers dont do to well in a shop.
they get beat up pretty good.

as computers get older no one wants to support them anymore.

If you think thats bad BLUETOOTH telephones grow outdated every six months and we have to have a new list of phones for new vehicles. thats not to mention the phone companies refuse to agree to any standards.

auto manufacturers are left in the dark whilst the phone companies just keep going and leaving customers out in the dark as well.

Land Rover has been using the CAN bus long before the LR3 came out. If you knew anything about Land Rovers you would know that. In 2005 LR changed from the LCS file configuration to the .CCF configuration. If you had been working on LR's for any length of time you would know this. As for the sophisticated equipment, when LR introduced WDS (Won't Do Shit) the program was larger than the T4 laptop could handle. Hence the introduction of IDS. DUUUHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Again if you had worked for LR for any length of time you would know this.

I thinking maybe this thread should read:
The cost of my ignorance is going way up

or:
My cover is blown

or how about somethin simple like:
HUH?

That's pretty much all I can contribute. At this time I like to buy a round of drinks to you all.

I still maintain that if a tech knows what every componant does, how it works, and knows what symptoms would exist if it failed, he could diagnose as well as a computer, with alot fewer trips to the parts department.

GPS is great, but you're screwed if the battery goes dead. Compases don't need batteries.

actually its a different CAN PROTOCAL then used in the freelander and the other models.

we went to ids cause wds was being phased out by Ford.

WDS is a ford system adapted for Jaguar and land rover.

we had only two years with wds and its been almost eight years with jaguar systems.

also we spent a fair amount of money for the ids system because it incorporates both t4 and wds but in a more functional system. it still has a few downsides but upgrades are easily to download cause its internet based.

best apart about the system is a the toughbook from panasonic.

it aint cheap but for well over three grand its designed to take a heap of abuse.

chances are the toughbook may be the computer used by more independants when the price goes down. they are designed to be dropped and still running.

labtops are great but man they dont take abuse for too long.

and the newer vehicles are getting updates instead of actual parts anymore.

other then coolant tanks we havent done anything to newer land rovers then updates.

the trick to making money now is knowing bulletins. otherwise your wasting time trying to diagnose problems with little info . in a few years it will be different but for now its just updates.

we have jaguar to thank for that. proven systems but only programming problems to deal with.

and maintenance is alot cheaper. no more six hundred dollar 30k, 60k service.

just change the oil and reset the maintenance light.
