Goofing off in the great white north.
|
I just got back from a 5 day Kayak trip in northern Maine in which I drove my disco on some pretty gnarly backroads. People up there couldn't believe it when they saw me doing 45 mph on rough washboard roads. I think I may have talked some people into buying Disco's, who maybe had only seen one or 2 before in their lives as they aren't too common up in those parts. The old XD held up pretty well and didn't give any problems, although it is apparent to me now that I need new rocker shafts and arms bad. My 4.0 clicks so bad at idle that it almost sounds like a diesel. I took some pictures of it with the time delay on my digital camera, which I set on the side of the road at scenic spots, and timed the shots just right to have me drive by as the shutter clicked. I'll post them tomorrow.

Where did you go up north? Alagash? Northern Woods? I got up there for the first time last summer and it's awesome. Did not go too far in just to the north side of Moosehead Lake. Hope to do a trip this summer and go deep in for a few days.

So, Colin, where are the pics, dammit? Yeah, Kevin. The Allegash Wilderness Waterway is an awsome area to explore. Makes you realize how big the state of Maine is. That's all paperland. The South African paper co, SAPPI, owns literally millions of acres up there but they are slowly selling some of it back to the state. That pic at the top of the page of the Defender with the red canoe on top was Colin and me, a couple years ago. The first stop in the Allegash is the Ranger station at Chamberlain Lake (Not counting the Telos check point you have to stop in at and sign in, they like to know everyone eventually gets out) The Ranger stattion is 75 miles north of Greenville. C'mon Colin, your audience is getting tired of waiting. Where's the damn pics. |

Ughhh, Once again technology has defeated me.
My camera decided it was only going to load half the pics onto my computer before going haywire and not transferring any more. I have a couple shots of video I took. I'm on duty today, so I'll try to post them tomorrow or over the weekend. My camera had better start working by sunday when I go to British Cars By the Sea.

I have been reading this web site for almost a year and now make my 1st post because of this speak of MAINE.
Kevin- Anytime you want to go, I live in Westbrook, almost in Windham off 302. I am looking for someone else to go with down some trails in Westbrook. I am pretty much stock but go often by myself, which is not always fun. Back to the original, I definetly have taken my discovery up "north", past Kokadjo, about 20 miles, the disco left the earth, unintentionally, and yes I spilled my beer. The thing is up there is that if you venture to far off the main paper roads and get stuck , nobody will know you are their. Then you have a long walk. A buddy of mine has a camp at the last driveway before the roach river in Kokadjo, great fly fishing!!! Mark |

It sounds like you may not have gone further than the Ripogenus Dam. That's about 25 miles above Kokadjo, and the Telos Check Point is a little over 40 miles above Kokadjo. That's where you are entering the paperland and just below the Allagash area. When you check in at Telos, you must give them an approximate time you plan on leaving the area, otherwise they come looking for you, but you're right, It's aa long walk to anywhere. If you tried it this time of year, there wouldn't be much left of you after the blackflies were finished (State Bird of Maine). If you're going any further than Chamberlain lake, you really need to carrying extra fuel. It's amazing what you'll see when you get that far up. The Golden Rd, and a few of the other "main road" are fairly level and you can almost travel as fast as if you were on a paved road. getting off onto any of the other roads, into the 'bush' and you will immediately know what proper vehicle preperation is all about. One word of caution: If you are on the Golden Road, or any of the other larger feeder roads, and it isn't sunday, gve the log trucks a WIDE bearth. They have the right-of-way, usually stick to the crown (center of the road) Haul ass, and don't give two shits for anybody else. Having one go by at 60mph, with the mile long dust cloud, can be disconcerting, if you haven't found a spot to pull off. You don't need to go that far up to find some nice trails. Just above Greenville, off the Lily Bay road, try the roads up and around Elephant Mountain, or take some of the trails into the Spencer Mountain area, and Lobster lake. Take your Gazetteer with you, and a GPS. |

I usually average about 45mph which is the posted speed limit on most of those roads. The worst part is getting stuck behind someone who likes to drive slow. You pretty much have to pull over for a while because their dust cloud will blind you and clog your filters pretty quickly. Some odd vehicles I passed were a large refrigerated box truck(probably going to Prays camp) and a BMW M3 that was hauling ass on the paved section of the golden road. When I went up it had just rained so the road was nice to drive on, no dust. Some of the bogs were flooded over the road so I had to do some fording up to my hubs in water. On the way back things had dried out and my yellow truck is now a nasty browinsh color. Chamberlain Bridge is about 65 miles north of Greenville, so about 48 miles from Kokadjo. It almost didn't seem like I was that far up until I tried my radio and only got 2 stations, with no weather broadcasts either.
