Cool Which do I buy?

Allow myself to introduce... myself.

I am at that point where its about time to get a new (used) vehicle. Currently I drive a '97 Mountaineer that has 160,000 on the clock and isnt worth more than $3,500. I still havent decided if I am going to drive it till it needs $1,000 in repairs or if I will get what I can for it now. I think I am leaning toward the latter.

Anyway, this is where you come in. I would like a Land Rover. I know that they arent exactly considered hassle free trucks, but I do like to tinker (I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination), upgrade, and ride off-road (although most of my off-road driving is fire roads etc).

I need a comfortable daily driver. I need to be able to tow a 20' I/O boat for short distance (60 miles round trip). And I do not want a mechanical headache (which makes me wonder if I would be better off with a Land Cruiser).

Part of me thinks I should get an '03-'04 Disco II for $16-20k with ~ 50k miles. I get the impression that they might be more reliable and more comfortable than anything older. But, another part of me thinks that I might prefer to get a mid 90's Range Rover with 90k on the clock for ~$11-13k. I assume the Range Rover would be easier to tinker with, but potentially have more mechanical issues and be 1 step closer to needing a significant repair. But, if I get the Range Rover I probably will not have to finance it as I would with a Disco II.

From what I have told you about myself and my needs, which do I get? Or do you have a different suggestion?

Get either. Just get an extended warranty, which may pay for itself many times over.

The fiance axed the idea of buying something older than what I currently have. So it looks like an '03-'04 Disco II will be in my future.

Is my price range of $16-$20k for a clean grocery store driven '03-'04 with 30-50k miles sounds about right?

First off..If you have a mountaneer... you will be happy w/ Land Rover... My fiance drives an explorer(basicallly the same thing) and it always needs repairs.....

They will both pull what you want to pull... The range rover is what I prefer, however the 95 - 02 style seems to be full of eletrical problems. We have a 97, and it does great and we love it...but there has been problems with it along the way. The disco's don't seem to have as much of a problem as the P38(95 - 02) rangies....

That being said I drive a 92 Rangie and love it!! It's just slower..... But I have not had the problems!

Wow, I'm honestly surprised to hear you say that. My mounty went 160k miles with only basic maintenance. I replaced the thermostat and temperature sending unit - thats it. Literally.

I've seen 04 S models under $20K and still under warranty. The trick is to get one with warranty left so you can have it 'de-bugged' after you find anything wrong. It also opens up the extended warranty possibility.

I've seen an '04 for as little as 18K on the web. Around here, ATL, I've seen 24K for almost every one on the lot. Why not keep the Mtneer as a second vehicle, unless that's covered, not necessary, not an option...? Every time I think about selling my other car, the Rover gets all jumpy an' shit. So I still have two vehicles.

I just picked up a 2001 Discovery II SE for 11.5k. The vehicle is in nearly perfect shape. Has the front brush guard and the ones on the tail lights. No wear on any of the seats at all. Even the drivers is perfect. Best thing is it only has 60k on the odo. I am very happy with it! Driven by a bankers wife. He had it serviced every 5k. He owned it for 3 years and never had to bring it to the shop. Hope it does the same for me Good luck in your Rover Hunt!
