Default driving lights/connected to highbeam laws

i have a 93 rrc and they came w/ factory driving lights that turn on with the highbeams. i have seen alot of lr's w/ this set up and was wondering if anyone knows fed laws about this topic. i live in MN and the rrc was a dealer vech for the 1st 4 years in VT and had this driving lights w/ the factory brush guard. mike wrote there might be fed laws against this driving lights that turn on w/ the highbeam. any help would be great. i could not find anything helpful on a google search. i like thoughs lights in the backroads (deers/etc) were i live in mn but i do not want a ticket. no one every see the highbeam because i turn them off right when i see headlight from a distance.

currently only Pennsylvania has a problem with it. but you have to check individual states lighting laws

If nothing has changed it is a federal law over seen by the department of transportation, they regulate all saftey issues on all cars made here or overseas.
When I was in California, they also had a state law that basicily stated.
lights had to have black lens covers
driving lights could not be wired up to any power scourse while being driven on the roads
and no other lights could be wired into the high beam relay, PERIOD.
They could actually impound your vehicle when being stopped for a violation of their law.
As I mentioned before, if you need more high beams, replace your bulbs with some 100 watt bulbs, they might be illegal, but it is hard for an officer to prove it.

NC has a problem with them not connected to the High Beams....I had to have all 6 of my Hella 1,000's ran through the high beam. Not really the route I was wanting to go but it will do.

yours have a rocker switch or 2? my driving light, if i have them connected they just turn on when i switch the high beams on. i could not find a switch in the front? is that normal that they just go on auto w/ highbeams? i might just take them off and get new hella's that come w/ a rocker switch.

Yeah I've go two switches that I put in my console next to the shifter and if the switches are on, once the high beams come on the lights engage. Kind of sucks if theres someone in front of you on a night ride but man it lights everything up with all 6 of them on. The two lights on the brush guard are controlled with one switch while the 4 on top are controlled with the other one.

To answer your question honestly, Im not sure about how many different ways you can run them but I guess they can be directly wired to the high beam without a switch but I'm not 100% sure.

lol, u probly scare the shit out of them and u!! that's alot of power! so if u have the high beams on then u can turn one or both switchs in our console to turn on all 6 lights. my do not have the switch in the console, when i turn the high beams on the 2 driving lights on my brush bar just go on. i do not like that, i wish i could just have the high beams on and then if i want the driving lights on i can just switch them on.

Oh i see what you mean....I would think there would have to be a switch somewhere, although a lot of people like do like for their lights to automatically come on. I prefer to have the option of turning them on/off while the High's are on. You may have to take the lights off and the wiring, get a switch or two, and re-wire although someone else may have a better solution.

I would think so....I know people who have bought lights off other peoples vehicles etc. Im no expert on lighting but I don't see why you couldn't rip it all out and start over doing it how you wanted it done.

Back to the originial question, it is against the ferderal standards that are set and regulate by the department of transportation, a federal agency.
Now will they go after you, hard to say, is it right or wrong, hard to say, but it is the guide line set by the feds thru their agency.

do u have any writen info on this subject??? in your first post u talk about calf and what they will do and in NC it seem to have a problem w/ connecting to low and not w/ high beams. i put this out but nobody has any links to the fed laws?! it seem like it is state to state (NC and etc). i have searched on the web and have not found any info on fed laws. do u have the info, u keep talking about the federal standards that are set and regulated by the dept of trans but why do u not post anything? that is all that i am asking the writen info

actually i ditched my skirt up front and the wiring for those fog lights were still there. i mounted some KC lights on my brush guard and wired them right into the existing wiring so they turn on with the fog light button but when the brights are on they go off. So basically i drive around all the time with my brights on and when some dickhead decides to cut me off i flick my brights off and bada BOOM his car lights up like a xmas tree. very handy.
