Ok guys, for those of you who'd read my previous post regarding the NATO finish, im still undecided wether to repaint in stock Avalon Blue or to totally redo the exterior with military-grade primers and paints.
I've thought about both options long and hard and have come to the conclusion that I need some help deciding. Repainting in stock Avalon Blue This option would have the truck repainted and finished back to its stock color and look. With this option, DIIa raised lettering would be applied to the hood and tailgate. Keeping it clean and scratch free would require tons of waxing, which I dont mind. now.. NATO Green/Desert Tan Finish Besides the fact I'll need some help to decide amongst the two colors, I am uncertain of the exactl way it'll look, as this has not been attampted before (taken that no one has posted any pictures on all of the forums I've posted). I've read that the guys that done it to their Defenders, found out that it scratches easily, but I'm uncertain if this is because the paint wasnt applied correctly. I've seen Defenders in wartime images that are dented and beat up, but not scratched. This would be a first time type of thing for a Discovery so that could be a good and bad thing. I have read the military grade primers and paint help preserve the metal for much much longer. Well, vote away! Thanks for the help! ![]()

Forgot to mention is a Matt finish, meaning no shine, a simple hosedown with little cleaning agents requires.

So far the NATO paint is winning and I think im going to do it as I've been doing some more reading about that stuff. I'm hoping it'll look something like this...
Don't think I'll be painting my NATO wheels though. ![]()

Some paint! It turns a Disco into a Defender. Wow! j/k
I voted for the NATO paint - that avalon blue (my disco's color, too) just doesn't stand up to olive green. What do the ladies, think, though...

I painted my Willys M38 with a semi gloss dark olive drab and I am really impressed with the results. The paint code is 24087. WW2 military vehicles were painted with a lighter, rougher finish paint called 34087. 24087 is a period color for a 1952 military jeep and it is really durable. It's a little darker than the nato green. Since it is a semi gloss, it's not real shiny, but also not rough like the earlier military paints. My experience with flat and matte paints is that they don't scratch easily but they do show any kind of scuff marks. We use them a lot in the engine room on my ship with mixed results. Also any oil that gets on a flat or matte finish will be a pain to get out. Soap and water works well to remove it but a lot of scrubbing is also required, where as with a semi gloss, a garden hose will remove all but the most stubborn dirt. Here's a picture of an M38 very similar to mine.
