Posted on DWEB, maybe you guys will like it too.
After this morning, I will never buy any vehicle that doesnt have "Rover" somewhere on it. Waking up early,my buddy (a jeep fanatic) and I decided to take the Disco out and let her get a little dirty. It rained here pretty heavily last night, and i have yet to really go out and see just what my Rover is capable of. After driving around the local area for about an hour, we came across what looked to be a pretty nice trail on the bank of a river. We hit a fair amount of mud holes on the way down (somewhat disapointing), until we came to a halt at the end of the road. In front of us was a drop off of about 20 feet, with a pretty steep approach angle. Keep in mind, I have a bone stock Land Rover Disco 2. Me: I think i can make it down. Bud: No, no way. We're too far out here to get stuck. Me: I think im going to try it. Bud: Dude, my jeep couldnt even make it down there, much less back up it. My friend has an older model Grand Cherokee with a lift kit and some Swampers. He also has about 2 grand worth of offroad accesories on it. My disco, once again, is bone stock. Bud: Well, let me get out then so i can spot you. Turn that hill traction thingy on. Me: I dont think i need it. Bud: Whatever man. Its your LUUUUUUXXXXEEERRRRRY vehicle your ruining. Your walking to go get help, not me. Me: Dude, just get out of the car. He gets out, shaking his head the whole time. We are about 5 miles back in some thick brush, and i begin to wonder if i really want to make that walk. Yep. Sure do. THE LOOK ON MY FRIENDS FACE WHEN MY BONE STOCK DISCO WAS ON TWO WHEELS GOING DOWN THE HILL WAS PRICELESS. I even stopped and rocked it back and forth for a second, laughing at him. I made it down, no problem. My confidence in the vehicle began to rise. We made a run at the river, and the traction control worked wonders. Ive driven other 4WD's before in similar situations (Thick mud, usually got bogged down on the river edge) , but the Disco took it like it was absolutely nothing. It was time to go back up the hill. Bud: Well, im getting out again. I want to see how bad this is going to hurt this thing. Me: I think you might make the walk back even if i make it up. To make a long story short, 2 attempts was all it took. Throwing mud everywhere on two wheels and still kicking forward. Once again, the look was priceless. My buddy climbs back into the car, with a defeated look on his face. Bud: Well, i guess its time to go back and wash the Jeep. Me: Why is that? Bud: I need to make a trip to the Land Rover dealership. Look, i know you guys all have stories like this, but i just wanted to share it with you. I thought you might get a kick out of it. Im proud to know that we drive the best vehicles on the planet. Cheers. |

At school they have jeep that isnt in the best of conditions because LR competed against it so many times it lost on the stuff that LR had no problem with.
BTW, remember it comes down to the driver not the machinery. |

Great story, wonder if it is actually true or just a good fire side story. I too own an almost bone stock Disco 2 and I love to see the looks on the faces of people when they see me do stuff that they just had problems with in the jeep's or toyota's with 33". And i'm not even a very experienced off-road driver yet. So yes its 80% the driver but hell Land Rovers these days do so much for you that it makes it look easy.
