Only white chicks I know that would work on are 70 years old

Anyway the local black South Africans have been running the country since Mandela was released back in the early 90's, and I doubt if the ad would have been run there if it was not politically correct according to their censors.

I suspect the vast majority of my fellow South Africans would have thoroughly enjoyed the ad if it had depicted a white female, appreciating the humour as well as the setting, as well as the lady's charms. But would have complained about the context, since it would have been false.

However, to place such a picture would have also placed the setting somewhere else and the ad would no longer have been in context.

We have enjoyed a considerable amount of freedom of expression here in the last 15 years or so, partly due to reaction against the previous puritanical regime and partly due to the recognition here that we have a rich diversity of people of all colours, traditions, religions and cultures.

It's why we call ourselves the Rainbow Nation.

Recognition and celebration of these diverse cultures includes, not only respect, but the true ability to see humour in a given situation, without having to consider racism. In fact, we go to great lengths to provide full recognition of all aspects of our people.

Advertising, particularly, is often now topical, or pokes fun at the stereotypes. The Madam & Eve series of cartoons depict this very well and are very popular as a result. The traditional stereotyping is ridiculed to the extent that stereotyping itself is seen as ridiculous. I can recommend looking them up on Google, all cartoons are shown there on the day they are published and there's a huge archive.

In the case of this advertisement, it could have depicted a similar sight on a remote beach and quite correctly used a bare breasted white female as the fun part, to the enjoyment of all. It could also have used a female of any race, colour, or background. I'm not sure why the selection of any particular one would cause offence to anyone, except, of course if depicted an offensive picture of a member of a religious sect in a way that depicted same.

However, depicting a beach scene would have caused an uproar here, as beach driving is illegal, having been banned a few years ago for very sound ecological reasons. Such a depiction would have gone seriously against public opinion and would certainly not fit Land Rover's image of "Tread Lightly" and their serious conservation efforts.

Indeed, the ad is clearly set in Northern Namibia, in the Koakaland area and the female shown is a Himba tribeswoman in the traditional apparel seen commonly in that area. It conveys the image of travelling to remote places (and, believe me, that's remote !) over great distances on less than perfect terrain for vehicles.

It would have been inappropriate to show a bare breasted Zulu in that context, as it would a Xhosa, a Shangaan, a Tswana, a Sotho, a Pedi, an Indian, a Chinese, or even a white female !

Quite apart from the fact that 90% of our population is not white and we have a policy of providing equal opportunities, therefore there is only a 10% chance of a white female being appropriate in any setting, but, even in these cases, we recognise that attire would be suitable for the cultural background and the context. Clifton beach in Cape Town or South Beach in Durban used as an advertising backdrop would quite correctly show a variety of charming ladies and gentlemen in an amazing state of undress, of ALL colours. You'll see such ads here too Fortunately

I particularly enjoy the sight of a very nice looking bare breasted white girl on a huge roadside hoarding (billboard ?), as you leave Johannesburg International Airport, with her bikini top flying away in the wind and the slogan suggesting that XYZ cell phone company can give better coverage. It's humorous and she's a delightful sight !

Regards,
Brian

No please don't Searcaigh, ads showing reckless driving are bad enough, that one is pretty poor taste in that regard, but it's mild compared to most of the "idiot" level ads shown by most of the competitors. Please show respect to any pedestrians you encounter, particularly those in areas where motor vehicles are not the prime means of transport to the locals, they don't understand all the dangers, so you need to drive accordingly.

On the other hand, if you're passing through Johannesburg at any point on your trip, drop me a line and we'll meet for a beer or three and can swap insults and stories for as long as you have time

Regards,
Brian

well stated Brian, and i can see your point, However, my point was not to be taken as a literal context refrence, but as a symbolic one.
for example: around the world in the past, not as much present. Magazines such as National Geographic and Digest would print pictures of topless african women stating the reason as research interest.

You see in earlier days black or African women were seen as to be "lower" then the European woman, as were men. and were not even considered to be sexually acctractive to europeans, or it would have been labeled Taboo.

so to have a half naked black woman on a magazine would be equal to having a naked animal on the cover, non-sexual hence non- threatning. but a caucasion woman half naked on a magazine is considered sexually appealing, hence Pornographic.

so my conflict lies in the fact that- the picture in question is not considered pornographic because the black person in that community is not considered a person per sa, but rather lower then her white counterpart.
the location and the context is not the issue, its ;why isint that picture not considered quisai- pornographic.

and dont get me wrong , i Freakin love PORN!
