my range rover broke down a couple of weeks ago and my mech thinks that the transmission is worn ,but i have read on the web that it could be the front diff that is the prob what do u think

Could be either one. Can you lock your cdl on your truck? If you can, it's really simple to diagnose. Remove front driveshaft, lock cdl. If you roll, it was your diff. If not, it's your trans. Even if you can roll, don't drive it. You'll throw broken chunks of gear and carrier all over, and ruin even more.
