Some states issue a new title after a salvage titled car has been rebuilt, others don't, but the history is always there. A lot of people figure salvage title history takes off a third of the value. This is more true on high production cars than low production cars, like the Defender. My Defender had a slavage/rebuildable title when I got it, but they are so sought after, and easily rebuilt, only the worst of the burned ones get scraped vs rebuilt. I didn't give a damn, I was just glad to find it, especially at the price I paid, and that it is so easy to rebuild.
$8K isn't far off what a clean titled '04 Disco is worth, but it largely depends on how long you think you'll keep it. '04s, in general, are sought after more than other years, and there aren't many on the market at the moment. A good barometer is what they are bringing on ebay.

The Disco 1 had a bad reputation for failing to deploy the airbags on front end impacts, but I thought that was corrected on the D2. Apparantly not if the damge was enough to total it, but only hood and bumper replacement. I would suspect (and inspect) the radiator support panel and associated tinwork on the front of the car.
