Default Land Rover engine swap

I have a 2002 Disco II that I love. I have had it for a little over a year now and praise God, it has been pretty much trouble free. I really love the truck but am not so fond of the 2005+ LR models so I want to keep this one a long time. Has anyone ever kicked around the idea of swapping out the 4.0 V8 engine for a Ford 4.6 V8 or a GM small block or similar engine?

Could this be done while still passing smog tests? I know it's not practical but could it be done?

I'd rather do a 5.9 cummins or 6.6 duramax

Check out Overfinch in the UK. They have been doing 5.7L swaps for years. A good place to start with posibilites!

yeah but on the range rovers.

and to swap a newer 02 you would have to bring along the ecm. otherwise you end up with alot of issues.

It's not worth it- When the time comes, just drop a 4.6 Rover engine in it and accept it.

I agree with MuddyOval. Whether you transplanted a Ford or GM small block you will also need a new transmission, and as for Overfinch, they are far too expensive with every thing they do, although they have some great gear.

I'd never do Overfinch, out of my league!

It's easier to have Jedi come to his own conclusion.

I have a 4.6 Persuit from East Coast Rovers in my 1992!

For my 91, I seriously looked at installing an LS1 along with a Camaro 4L80E transmission, but decided the cost wasn't worth it, so I dropped in a 4.6 hi compression engine from TVR.

Man that's a dead horse. But if you have the money and a capable shop, go for it. In about two years I hope to pick up an '04, rip out all the BS electronics and keep it for a while. When the motor dies, I'll do what Thor did; take it to ECR.

Agreed. The Engine management ECU "talks" to the security ecm. Without sticking with original systems you may find a can of worms you wished you hadn't opened. There will always be loads of LR shortblocks, so when the time comes, if the rest of the trucks condition warrants the expense, just put in another LR Long block, shortblock and stick with the original fuel injection.

Why is it a dead horse? In reality probably everything on this board and every board for that matter has been adressed before at some point and the search function will only get you so many answers for your specific question.

As to the topic at hand, I figured all along that I would have to bring in a new ecm specific to whichever engine I chose. As for the transmission, is there any specific reason I would have to get a new one? Would the current one not mate with a 4.6 Ford V8 or a GM small block? Also I liked the idea about getting a newer D2 and then taking out all the electronic stuff. What specific items would you be getting rid of? ABS?

Also I know this would be a poor investment, but aren't all Land Rovers? I mean if I wanted to go for a good investment I would drive a Toyota Corolla. I would hope that this project could be done for $10 grand. Is that way to optomistic?

I would like to see if anyone knows if anyones put the turbo diesel cummins straight 6 in a d1 I would complety scrap the electronics, drivetrain, axles and run the 5 speed manual from a dodge and all but physical constraints is what i'm worried about size wise and the motor weight is nearly 1500 pounds. anyone know if its been done?
