Default Looking for a Lander Help

First off I want to say Hi, and that this forum is the best.

I'm looking to hopefully purchasing a used Land Rover Discovery I or II in the next 2 weeks or so. I wanted some help at what I should look at as problem areas, like high mileage or troublesome years. Also other information that is usefull would be appreciated.

I also need some help in the differences between the Disco I and II. Which do you consider the better make or is there no difference.

I live in CA and around here I'm finding some Disco I's for around 4-5K but they have over 100K in Miles. I'm finding Disco II's with the same problem 90-110K for around $7K. I have about $4K to spend or I can finance around $7K.
What would you do?

I will be using this vehicle as my daily driver about 50miles a day. Also it will be used as my primary winter vehicle where we can sometimes get 6-7ft of snow in about a week.

Thank You for the help.

Hello BDC87
I live in Ca too!
maybe I can help you.
The differences between the D1 and D2
1. The D1 is smaller and the taillights are lower on a D1 D2 is higher.
2. As far which is better It all depends what you have in mind. If it's wheeling many will say the D1 because it has a CDL. But the D2 with the ETC is very good as well. Both are kickass off the road.
3. Problem areas include mostly electrics. LUCAS. some have sensors that go off and on. this includes both the D1 and D2. if a D1 if the CDL hasn't been use it will get stuck. All rovers leak something if not leaking not rover some of the head gaskets leak but again if the Truck is well cared for it I wouldn't worry.
4. High miles on a Disco is really not high because with proper care and repairs the Disco can run well over 300K. But with anything over 100K I would have it checked well. A well care Disco with miles is alot better than a Disco with no care and low miles.
5. All years of the Disco have their share of problems maybe except the 04 because all Disco probs were gone by then. I have a 96 and many others do as well on here. the best years of the Disco is 94-04 only years of the disco but some may say becareful of the 96-97 years. Again if the truck is well cared for any year is a good year.
OTHER INFROMATION
Discos are very strong made trucks.
Rigid I mead RIGID frame very strong Drivetrain/gearbox
alloy/steel body with safety cage They are the safest in Rollovers.
nothing looks like rovers.
in skilled hands the Discovery can outwheel many other 4x4's even modded
4x4's
You will get looks expect it.
and ROVERS RULE!
also if you live near the Bay Area there are many discos for sell out there less that 100K miles and well within your price range.
check out the website. www.craigslist.com and then go to cars for sell.

Thank You for the reply. I will be getting the rover checked out by a machanic before I buy, I have one in the family who works at M Benz of Sacramento. I live near the Foothills going towards South Tahoe, I'm at around 4000 Elevation. The bay area is about a 4hr. drive but if I find a good deal it might be worth the trip. With the rover I hope to use it for some mild offroading on spare time. The years I'm looking at or finding are 95's, 97's and 99's. I picked to get a Rover because I need a 4x4 and I might as well get the best 4x4 out there. More feedback/comments are appreciated.

Once I get my Disco I plan on putting a 2" full flex lift but I can't seem to find one for DII's (if I end up with a DII) that is made by Rovertym. I also plan on Rovertym Rock sliders with the nerf bars, and Rear Bumper; has anybody used these? I will also think about the Rovertym or Red Rhino Front Bumpers. For sure I'm going to get a Safari Snorkel, there is a ton of dust and polen around here. I also like the Roof Rack Ladders but primarly for their looks.

I bought mine last year with 74000 mi for 11000. It was a lease and the person who leased it was the official second owner, making me technicaly the second. The truck was original from Princeton Land Rover. Between the car fax report and going over the repair history with Princeton I figured I did all I could do to research the truck. I have put 35000 miles on it in one year alone because of a job related need (back and forth to Cape Cod every week for a year from N.J.) Follow all of your service intervals, Keep it very clean (except when out getting it DIRTY) engine and undercarraige, don't punch the accelerator and slam on the brakes, keep the oil fresh, spark plugs clean, etc....... I wound up exceeding my milage estimate by leaps and bounds, paid a friggin ransome in gas but the truck does not leak a drop of oil or any other fluid, I think I got really lucky and found a truly good truck. I am sure the people on this forum will be super happy to help you out with questions and no bull shit advice. They did it for me when I got mine. Good luck
