I am seriously considering a purchase for a new Land Rover LR4 HSE with 7 seat comfort pkg.
Here are my misgivings. I live about 170 miles away from the dealer, and with the reliability history, ( I know it is highly debated in the community) as well as the oil change needing to be a siphoned oil change, will I be constantly in need of returning to the dealer? I was assured by the salesperson that any ASE certified service center could handle the oil change, I am just not sold on his information.
Any opinions on my situation from experienced land rover enthusiasts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
if you want to do the oil changes yourself you can probably just get an electric oil change pump for boats, im assuming if its a siphoned oil change it is something similar to how it would be done to an inboard boat. then again being able to afford a new one the cost of an oil change shouldnt affect you much. find a good independent shop that deals primarily in land rovers or at least has expirience with them. theyre out there, just hard to find. for example the primary porsche guy in my area lives more or less surrounded by woods in a metro park (i have past 944/912 expirience) so nobody knows of him but the porsche people. ask other people in the area with rovers of all age and you should be able to find the right guy

Go for it ! I love the redesign on the LR4 ! Hopefully you can find an independent tech that knows Land Rovers and can help you out. For the service intervals that require more work, enjoy the drive to the dealer ! Hey, these things are for driving, not sitting !! I know the LR4 is more than just a new interior and front on a LR3, but most of the press is giving it excellent reviews and say pretty positive things about its expected reliability. Tata Motors might be bleeding pounds right now with Land Rover, but they really can't afford for the LR4 to go wrong if Land Rover is going to pick up where it left off when the economy tanked. Land Rover had momentum and if they bend over backwards to make sure things go smoothly right now, they will be able to get that momentum back. Enough about business theory....THAT IS A FINE LOOKING RIG !! GO FOR IT !!

I am trying to convience my husband to buy me a land rover. He is concerned about the upkeep and maintenance to one. Not sure where to find out about oil changes, and all those things vehicles need. Any suggestions ?

you will find tons of help here and there are resources on the internet as well. You can google for example "maintainance schedule-2004 Land Rover Discovery" and you will come up with online help. As for help here, what kind of Land Rover are you considering ? It can make a big difference what you are looking at, what year, etc. Many on this site do their own work. Others, like me, do everything but engine mechanicals (which we take to an independent Land Rover tech). Ultimately, a Land Rover is going to cost more than many vehicles to maintain, but equal to or less than some others....it is all relative....

170 miles to the dealer?
Ask them if they are going to come and get it if it won't start in your driveway?
I wouldn't buy anything NEW that didn't have a local dealer.
Used, out of warranty I'll buy what I like as I would never bring it to a dealer anyway.

The first thing, anyone who is familiar with Rover will tell you, is stay away from the dealer unless you don't mind paying 2 to 3 time the actual cost of repairs and maintances.
