Default New To Range Rover And Need Recommendations

HI all. I'm taking the plunge and want to get Land Rover Ranger Rover in the late 80s to mid 90s range and need recommendations as to the more reliable years. My main concern is drive train issues. I do understand by nature these vehicles are not without issues but I've cut my teeth on four Volvos from 1987 to 1999 doing everything from replacing axles and suspensions to rebuilding ABS computers with allot in between and I'm looking for some new kind of fun. So, which years do I search for and which years do I avoid.

Thanks in advance.

A few differences over the years, long or short wheel base, 3.5, 39 and 4.2 engines, 2 different t/cases and some had a air suspension.
All of them can be modified easily so it kind of depends on your needs.

I'd personally go for a 91-93 short wheelbase model. If you prefer long wheelbase, go for a 93-94.
The 95's were a one year only "soft-dash", and replacement parts for that dash are starting to get pricey, and hard to find. But it does have airbags if that matters to you. Stay away from the EAS air suspension, or find one that has already been converted to coil springs.

Best model to get is the 1991 Hunter. No abs, no sunroof, manual cloth seats, no sway bars. After that, 1989 Range Rover, still no ABS. or one of the other rare 1991 or 1992 models that made it here without ABS. Very rare. If you want the LT230 and not the Borg Warner viscous coupler, you're looking for a 1987 or 1988. Or a newer year where it's been swapped in. If you want EVERYTHING in it, 1995 with the Discovery style dash. More year/model details can be found here.

Watch out for rust. Rear door jams, front floor pans. Most tailgates have some rust. All steering boxes leak so don't be surprised by it or let it prevent you from buying a RRC.

Happy shopping!
