The rover ive been looking at has just decided not to start. According to the current owner he's tried jumping the monster and had no luck - however the electrical is still working. This would lead to believe to be the starter or ignition system - 1) is it very expensive to fix 2) is it a quick diy job or should a real mechanic take a look. 3) is it just a sign that the electrical will go?

1 - Depends on what the problem is and who does the work
2 - Depends on what the problem is and who does the work 3 - No If you do it yourself probably the most expensive thing would be a new starter for less than $300 for a new one. All this depends on what Rover it is, you don't say.

I'd love to be in the Rat Patrol

I just recently had my 1993 leave my daughter on the side of the road.
I would not start. Starter would not turn over. I thought it was the starter. But after taking it out and testing it by using the jumper cables the starter worked fine. Negative to the case and short out the bendix to the post. Starter should flip over and the bendix kick the shaft out and spin it. Anyway. I finally thought it had to be a relay failed, but it turned out to just be the ignition switch was giving us trouble. I refitted the wires end of the switch back on to the tumblers and fired the Rover right up. |

Definitely not your starter. Post your question in the Disco section, something like "TDi dies while driving" and provide a more detailed description of what the symptoms are. "cuts out" can mean a lot of different things to different people.
