Question Used Range Rovers, Discos, Series, Defenders... what's the deal?

Howdy,

I've got another Q for some of you. I've noticed locally that RR's and Discos are going cheaper than most Series and Defenders (Defenders have always been $$$).

What's the deal with the Discos and RR's? I am going to guess that it's the fuel consumption and price of fuel that is making people get rid of some of them as part of it. Are there some common issues with RR's and Discos that make them so cheap?

I've seen a common trend with many I have seen for sale, and besides each individual vehicles' issues (mileage, parts, damage, rust etc.) is there a reason RR's and Discos are cheap?
  1. Design flaws in components?
  2. Major engine issues from day one?
  3. Electrical gremlins from day one?
  4. Engine issues?
  5. Cost of parts?
  6. Hard to work on?
  7. Rust issues?

Thanks,
Shane

they're getting old. old cars are cheap until they become classics. you can get a Mercedes that retailed for $128,000 for $20K now too...
there's nothing inherently wrong with them, they are just old.

Well Discoveries were based on Range Rover Classic running gear when first released. Nothing inherently wrong with the design and abilities off road for both Range Rover and Discovery is pretty awesome from stock.

Defender Series, agricultural vehicles, plain interiors loads of space for camping gear.

Defenders again have common technology parts with Range Rover classics since the mid 1980's

Some issues with all vehicles in oz TD5 have oil weep from engine into the ecu harness causing problems for owners.

3.5 & 3.9 Range Rover engines suck petrol but what do you expect from a v8 in a 2 ton plus vehicle, if you wont economy buy a suzuki.

Any 4wd will cost you money to fix and keep on roads.

I would be considering what do l want it for, how much after market 4wd mods are available for it, what's the cost of keeping it moving in terms of service and parts, how readily can l get it fixed by somebody else if l am not up to the task myself

Of course I was just curious about the many RR's and Disco's I have seen. I was wondering if there were some years that were better than others in terms of the vehicle than others...

As with some vehicles like VW's the 1992-1999.5 automatics are horrible... transmission issues up the wazoo, and the 5 speeds have reverse gears chipping all the time... due to a weak gear material and size, and no syncro mesh for reverse.

I can attest to the weak reverse gear, actually the VW 020 is overall a weak transmission.

Yup! My friend is a tranny specialist that replaced mine when it went KABOOM on the highway. He mentioned that he sees a tonne of them making their way to transmission shops, and not for the first time usually. The driver can be a factor, but they seem to have similar issues, especially with the reverse gear.
