So, why all the sexually explicit avatar pics on this site?

The Avatar picture issue is one, I too, have raised. As I have probably seen every one over here, I can safely say, VERY few would make into the soft-core porn catagory, but even still, it in no way disminishes the crudity Hank displayed with his hard-core post.
I've been in the minority with respect to Hank in the past, and pretty well made my feelings known to the other moderators, however this time, I couldn't agree more with the decision to ban him. Proof that the decision was the right one was evident in the juvenile tirade he posted last night. It's not surprising he has so many infantile followers, and while there may be a fair share of children over here too, I think it's best he's found a welcome home on Dweb. If anything it will keep his flock over there. Hopefully he can pass on some of his good rover knowledge to them, and they will become able to participate in technical discussions instead of the only thing they know at this point. FWIW, I was playing with and scratch building rovers before Dan was born, and at almost 60 years of age, can appreciate his participation in tech issues, but the dickhead side of him makes it so not worth it.

Well, I am from the Dweb, D-90, Pirate, and maybe some others I cant recall. I dont care for the porn much either, but someone brought it up as well and it got me thinking....there's alot of "soft-porn" avatars on this site. So I was just wondering what gives?!

Moderators are discussing what to do about avatars and other questionable content found on this website. Our actions regarding censorship is based on complaints by members and guidelines the administrators/owners of this board set forward for us to follow.

In the meantime, if Avatars, or any other content is a concern for any users, you may turn them off within your control panel setup.

While logged on to this site, click on the User CP link on the upper left hand side of the menu bar. While in there, on the left menu bar, there is an link for Edit Options. A few pages down there is a section entitled Thread Display Options, and the first subsection is Visible Post Elements. From here you can un-check the display of Avatars, Images and Signatures.

So until we decide on what rules to implement, and you are worried about your children/wife/bosses seeing questionable content, please turn the displays off to be on the safe side.

Well, then I guess I gave you my perspective. I am speaking strictly for myself, and can't say what will ultimately be decided re the avatars, but, as you and I both seem to agree it is "soft porn", I'm guessing you would also agree there is a huge difference between the worst avatar over here, and Dan's idea of what's appropriate.
I too used to frequent D-90.com and Pirate but reading an entire thread to find only 20% of the posts worthwhile makes them more childish than anything I see posted by newbies over here. It certainly diminishes the quality of those sites.
Not to sound smug, but I haven't learned much new on the other sites, and despite having had a few Discos and a Rangie taking up space here, I prefer to give back what I know about Defenders and series trucks, without getting heckled by the people who can't handle learning something without tossing back some ignorant, off topic comment. Kinda makes me appreciate the people who go into Child Psychology.

Shouldn't that end it right there.....

If someone doesn't like it they can turn them off. Personnally it doesn't bother me. The way the lounge had to have a disclaimer maybe the front page of the site should have some disclaimer about avatars. Just my $0.02

i have not seen anything really considered Pornographic, my girls show some skin, but no more then say like Maxim magazine
Considering this Forum is for LR owners and enthuthiasts, i would assume most if not all are drivers, and thus would be over 16 years of age, hence the pics here should be fine.
you want Porn- goto the Hummer forum, they are twisted!

Disclaimers put the ball in their court...Its that simple....You don't want little 9 year old johnny looking at the girls on the net, give him a toy and tell him to go play in the living room.

And i can't say that I have seen one avatar that can be put in the same ball park as porn...I haven't seen one nude avatar yet in my time here.....just my opinion on the matter.

That mod would be me and you might want to get the facts straight there buddy.

My daughter is 8 and she doesnt surf the site with me all the time. There are times that she does come on in the room while I am on the computer and there are times she wants to see pics of rovers off-roading becuase she likes to go off-roading with me.

As for the avatars you can choose to have them not be viewable and thats what I do when she is in the room with me. The pics in the avatars on here are nothing you cant see in everyday life. What i do have a problem with is when I go to click on a link I think is about lockers and up pops a porn pic of a guy doing a girl from behind and then having to quick close it so my daughter doesnt see it. I dont go throught the lounge when my daughter is sitting here with me, but I do go through the off-road and show it off section.

Funny I went there to post the truth as to why he got banned (he was saying it was becuase people disagreed with his position on lockers which wasnt the case) he got banned for posting the porn links on here after being warned many times about the way he has been doing things here.

part of our job as parents is keepeing our children from such images, when i watch t.v. with my daughter, the Unit, House and Jack Bauer (friggin AWSOME season opener by the way ) ALL go off, and we watch Nanny Mcphee, or Dora's Christmaas movie.
T.v. and the internet is no place for a child to be unacompanied, so why take the risk? i only go on my regular web sites when the kids are asleep or down stairs, whether i'm on CNN.com, Howard stern.com, or LRO.com- with Popups and adware/spyware the internet is not safe, i don't leave it up to others to censor my children, they are too precious to leave such an important job to, and moderators have enough stress as it is.
Part of my job is making hip hop videos, but my kids have seen none of them, and wont till they are old enough, if I'm listening to Stern on sirius in the car, i switch to kids stuff channel when the kids are coming in. iF I'M playing HALO on the XBOX, i press pause and change to treehouse channel.
this is what parents should do, DON'T watch the most violent sport on earth like the superbowl ,and whine if a singers boob pops out.
o.k. i'm loosing it now, my point is don't depend on others to make the world safe for your kids, THAT'S YOUR JOB!

Turn off Avatars if they bug. Just make sure people know they can... or make it an option to turn them on to begin with.

I can fully understand all that John. I don't think you should have to go into the other sections and see that stuff either. I don't think that this should be a big issue (the avatars) since you can turn them off yourselves anytime you want to.
