I guess this is the right forum, just checking to see if anyone has switched to 85% ethanol 15% gasoline, It looks like making the ethanol is pretty straight forward and depending on your choice molasses etc it can come down to about $1.00 a gallon. What do you reckon would need to be adjusted/changed for a LAnd Rover Discovery to run on that mix?

That's a good question. I was wondering that myself. I know GM made a large amount of it's cars e85 capable, wonder if LR intends on doing the same for petrol engines? I read that brazil is having alot of money pumped into it based on that fact of it's argicultural production of energy-producing crops.

Wow 1.00 a gallon!! Thats like taking a step back in time. When does GM look to these vehicles on the road. Sounds great but it also seems like it would be a little harder to actually get gas because not every station would have it at first. How exciting though!!

I read somewhere that GM has been making them for quite sometime. I think they're X million GM's out there that are e-85 capable, they've been doing it for a few years I think.

Where can you get this gas? I know i heard that they already add it in in small amounts in the summer to prevent pricing from rising more than they already do or something.

I believe GM has a list of states in which they have stations, and I would imagine they also have a list of those stations locations.

Last month's issue of popular mechanics had a large article on alternative fuels where it actually compared, the different types of alternative fuels in regards to milage, availabilty, wheater and their applications.
GM has a lot of ethanol vehicles out but I don't think there are too many sources. The article also showed that 1 gallon of ethanol has less range than 1 gallon of gas and 1 gallon of diesel far surpassed both gas and ethanol.
The 15% gas in ethanol is only supposed to keep the fuel from freezing, so these e85 cars are basically running on grain alcohol. The problem with a conversion to ethanol as I see it would be the seals. Alcohol is extremely good at degreasing things and does not mix will with rubber which a lot of seals are made out of. I dont' think it does too will with plastic either but silione will probably work well.
The best fuel as far as milage is concerned may be diesel or bio-diesel but in cold climates that could freeze and clog the fuel lines.
I think if you ran e-85 in a rover the engine or any gas car the effects migth not be too good..

I guess one big disadvantage for Rovers using E85 is the amount of aluminum used in the engine and fuel system. I used to own a flexfuel Chevy S-10, and always wondered why the made the intake plenum out of plastic; its because of the highly corrosive nature of alcohol with aluminum.
Well i cant seem to find that article now - it was posted on AOL it was on the scrolling highlights but it said that the emissions were bad something about VOC being higher - the production cost would be greater, like shipping wouldnt be able to put in oil lines because it absorbs water and could freeze in the winter - im still tryin to look for it

I have a local gas station who has an ethanol pump...Indiana. If one was only using their rover for local driving...this is such a great thing to have! You'd hate to be almost out of gas...and not be able to find a station for fill up. I'm curious to know myself...if it is actually possible for ethanol conversion in LR's? I've read this post...but if a person were to be very serious to do it...think it can happen? I'd consider it....
