Ok the hybrid board is quiet so I figured I might share a couple photos of my build. Its a 89 RRC trail toy which Im putting a series body on. Right now Im at the mock phase with the body. The chassis/mounts are pretty much tacked together. Steering is sorted, headers fitted and everything is fitting. Got a D90 aftermarket external cage coming so gotta fit that and then I can take it all apart and start over again. Gordo
Very nice ! Lovin the Bus emblem in the background ..
Thanks for the compliments. Means a lot!
Ah yes, I grew up loving Aircooleds. Sold a 51 split window Standard Beetle (painfull considering what it would bring now) to buy my house and a 66 ghia to get this project going (better half demanded it). Someday I will have an early Beetle vert, but for now it's Rovers only!
Nice ! I just sold my 63 bagged ragtop and my 63 Rat Rod to start my hybrid project on my 55 series 1. The VW's just had to go..
I fully understand on the Volks! That series one will be awesome. Let me know if you want to borrow any of my resources. Ive got the A 4x4 is born DVD (build of a D100 from a RRC chassis, entertaining if nothing else and it gave me some ideas/tips), some various websites/photos, and a copy of Rolling Thunder (articles 11-20) on building a series hybrid. Honestly it doesnt contain the good stuff like chassis prep etc. Anyway, more than happy to help you out with advice, looks like your much more capable fabbing than I will ever be so it shouldnt be that bad. Me I bought a Miller 185 and Im learning as I go. (I do have a professional welder coming over to do the final welding on the frame though). Gordo
Gordo, thats a nice looking project you got going. It's good to see the hybrid forum get a bump. What engine/drivetrain are you using, stock RRC? Also are you and Moses twins seperated at birth? You both are into aircooled VW's, both building series based hybrids and both have pictures of jumping rovers as your avatars.

The engine/drivetrain is a standard 3.9/RRC running gear, with a holley 470 truck avenger vs EFI and an LT230 vs a BW Tbox. Trying to keep it as simple as possible as it is a lot of work. Thanks guys. Gordo
hey gordo, i was woundering about the rear corners of you series. it looks as iff you wellded them up and have taken the corner trim strip off is this so? I myself am building a hybrid right now as well and any good ideas would be great and maybe some more pics. i will try to upload some of mine as well when i get a chance. thanks
Hey Roversam, I just took the cappings off to paint it. Seemed easier to me that taping them up. If you go to the FLRC website in my sig, then go to the photo album you will see some more photos under Gordo's hybrid build. Im no master welder or fabricator so Im learning as I go. Ive done a bunch of homework on it as well and Ive seen a few around FL so I would be happy to share any ideas with you. Just PM me or post here. By the way, I picked up a 90 exocage this weekend so looking forward to getting that figured out next. The gas tank has been a chore lately as it has to be modded as well. Seems like nothing just fits. Gordo
wow look great man is that a series 3 that you are working on the bulk head looks different then my 1969 bulk head. well man i will keep in touch and get some pics of mine posted.

I might have to take you up on that offer ! I've got a 97 disco frame and drivetrain that I plan to use so thats a good start. I thought about using my stock chassis (very clean) but the 86" wheelbase is a little short for what I want to do so i'll stretch it. Your alot farther along than I am !
Heres some pics, nothing done other than deciding how to use as much as I can of the stock body. It will get there slowly...

I'll do it up right I wish I could find a cheap bulkhead and center out of a 107". But i'll probably have to make it.
If I leave the motor in the factory mounts (yes) I have to move the front axle forward a few inches (i like the idea of a 4dr) so I'm doing away with the coils and running the emulsion shocks and a custon 4 link (fun) to get the arms out of the way.
After seeing Gordo's I gotta get truckin ! That thing is tough
Heres what it use to look like.
