Hey guys, just bought a 97 disco after being land rover less for a couple of years.
For those who have converted to LPG, just wondering how you are finding availability away from city centres. I have a 2 door rangie which was on LPG, but I never really went for long trips in it.
Im not sure how many trips I will do in the disco, but dont want to rule out the possibility by going gas early.
Thoughts appreciated.

Thumbs up Hi living in Wellington, New Zealand

Just brought my first Rover (96 Disco) after falling in love with them, when I served my apprenticeship as a mechanic for New Zealand Motor corp. (we had all the great cars BMC, Jag, Rover and Rollers)

Did a lot of work on the 110s when they first came out, so it sounds like nothing has changed.

Had mine a month and been out in the mud every weekend, I tell my wife exploring, she says PLAYING .

So I am looking to join a club down here, if anybody can recommend a good one

Agro and all,
Good to find this part of the forum.
I live in Cairns FNQ but I see a couple of other northerners in the mix. I drive a 99 Disco TD5 which is my fourth 4WD since 1985.
We have heaps of Discos in this town. There has been an explosion of them in the last year or so. Most are TDIs. Still a number of Defenders around and a few shorties sold since the price came down.
We started a Land Rover Owners only club 18 months ago, about 16 trucks, a mixture of all breeds. We do a trip every month averaging 7 participants.
The new Discovery should be here in a couple of weeks , I have not heard much about it recently. Has it gone on sale down south yet? I heard a rumour that Ford held it back to ensure quality problems were sorted before it's release.
Are we getting to the point, and I include the Disco 2 here ,that they are now so expensive and ritzy that we are not taking them off road anymore?
Anyone wanting to contact the club for local info or coming this way the address is: Land Rover Owners Club of Cairns- FNQ
PO BOX 12221 CMC CAIRNS 4870
cheers, Lomo

Welcome Lomo I not 100% sure but I dont think the new disco is coming hear till around march time as a friend of mine will be getting one.

Question about your club was it hard to start up?? over here in WA there is about 6 of us and I looked at the idea for a while but the amount of paper work was unbelivable

Default Land Rover Club

Hello Agro and all interested parties.
Thankyou for the welcome. We had a club meeting this evening and a couple of visitors turned up which is always good news.
In early 2003 someone at our local dealership put up an "expression of Interest" bulletin in their showroom. When they had 40 or so names they wrote to everybody and set a meeting date. About 15 turned up and it was agreed that we do a trip to see if we liked the idea. The trip had to be an easy one as we had no public liability etc. In any event we did a trip on gravel roads through old mining areas. We had 8 trucks, 16 participants and it was a get to know you kind of day. Everyone tried really hard and it was a total success. This was in May.
We were extremely lucky in that we had an ex-president of the locally established 4WD club who ran a Rangie and had been in a Rover club in Brisbane. With his help we set up a steering committee.
We contacted the QLD association of 4WD clubs who supplied us with an information kit on how to start a new club. This enabled us to organise our paperwork.
We had to do three things 1] Become affiliated with the State Association
2] obtain public liability insurance 3] become incorporated.
We got lucky as Land Rover gave us $500 seed money. This helped pay the bills until we extracted money from members. We had to have at least 10 members to become affiliated. We ended up with a dozen.
Once we took money we could not have more trips until insurance was finalised. Everything was in place by August when we had our first general meeting and voted in our first committee.
In the meantime a trip committe had got underway. Our aim to have a trip every month.
Also we had to get a 'club pack' togeather containing club by-laws,code of ethics, Trip leaders duties,Trip gradings, Convoy procedures, and a duty of care notice. Most of this we obtained from the other club ,and amended it to suit our club.
This is not meant as a deterrant to anyone interested in starting a club, but it does require a lot of enthusiasm and some experience goes a long way.
It took about 16 weeks from the time of our first meeting to the club becoming official.
If anyone needs more info we will get it to you. I suggest you get onto the Website of your local 4WD body. For my part I found it was best to talk on the phone to the responsible officer in each organisation ,4WD, insurance and State Govt. for the best information.
Cheers, Lomo

Default V8's are too expensive to run

Have been running a V8 series3 for the last 5 or so years. It has been great, trips up the beach, Fraser island, Bunya mountains etc, but now I need to mortgage the house every time I want to go away to pay the fuel bill so it is time to part company with the old girl. In a couple of days picking up a second hand defender. I only hope the old girl doesn't get to upset before the deed is done. I am getting sick of only getting at best 5km per litre, plus the rego on a V8 is hideous.
Petrol here is about 93cpl, a couple of weeks ago it dropped to 84cpl and diesel is 96cpl. 2/2/05
And of course hi to all you wonderful landrover owners around the country, love waving to complete strangers who are driving landrovers and meeting up and chating landrovers, reading this site has been informative and entertaining as well. Will pass on my impressions of the defender after a couple of weeks of ownership.

John sorry to hear about your problems with the V8 series 3 , I have also just sold my Stage 1 V8 s/w to pay for my spa that I am getting installed soon but your lucky that you picked up that defender.

The defender may not be cheaper to fill but at least you don't have to go to the petrol station so much.

Hope you have fun with it

Have had the defender for a couple of weeks now, impressions - love it. It sits better on the road, quieter, faster, even now have to watch the speedo to keep within the limit, and a radio that I can get the cricket on is the bee's knees. Only thing now that has annoyed me is the slave cylinder has developed a leak, fluid coming inside the cabin below the clutch pedal, there always has to be something to fix, will try and do the job myself, what a interesting challange that should be. Do I miss the old stage 1?, not really. Do I love my new landy YES YES etc etc, can't wait to hit the beach and do some more fishing (sorry let me rephase that, "feeding the fish"). That is all for now keep smiling and see you all around.
