so I've got an 04' disco as most of you know. I'm planning on keeping my stock bumper for a good while, in the mean time is there anyway to mount a winch (i realize some cutting will likely be involved) with a stock 03/04 D2 bumper? Also I'd like to get a genuine parts push bar, are there still mounting options around/with that push bar installed? it looks like some of the G4 challenge 04 discos have winchs with what looks like basically the stock bumper....
p.s. i wouldn't need a monster winch. just one big enough (obviously) to work out my car + some

Scroll down near the bottom. I have a 2002 so I have that kind of style bumper. The mounting should be the same I imagine. I think it sticks out too far myself.
I like this mount. I think its sweet. Just a little hard to get to the winch.
I have to go through my bookmarks. LOL, I dont label stuff, and other stuff I forget to bookmark alltogether.
The RAVE CD has a picture of the stock winch mount (for mine at least) with a part number. I think its sweet, because its genuine. I've yet to find or see one at all for sale or on a truck anywhere.
yeah the second link is the sorta thing i'd be interested in. If i feel like going all out and adding a full winch bumper I have several in mind already.

I strongly urge you to rethink hidden winch mounts. Its NO fun having to find your winch clutch lever in mud/water (or both). Or during LONG recovery operations when you need to spool out and wind up constantly. You'll end up cutting your arm up real good while accessing the lever over and over again (if its in a tight spot) Besides that, it's more difficult for the mud/water/other debris to fall off with these mounts and you will notice that your winch will age faster.
Also keep in mind that Winches need to be serviced, so you want to have something that's easy to access when the service time comes around.
Contrary to popular belief, the the factory winch mounts are VERY strong and makes for a great recovery point.
This picture is from one of the EE groupees. Notice how he put the plug for the solenoid on the grille. You can keep the internals of the solenoid in its box under the hood and make it waterproof....

I would have to agree with JC putting your winch down that low and tucked inside the bumper like that is asking for trouble. I would be more inclined to go with the one in the pic he posted. Easier to get to for use and service.
I have heard also that the ARB bumpers are not as strong as they look but I have no first hand experience so it's all just rumor to me at this point.
If I need a bumper I'll break out the welder and see what I can come up with lol.
Funny part is I have a winch mount for the RRC but no winch.

ALAK depending on where you are in canada you may want to get hold of Atraxia ( not sure if he is on this forum ) he has a shop in Stoney Creek and he has designed a slightly beefier Rovrtym style bumper for the D2 and i know he is willing to make a couple of them and at a whole lot less than the numbers you where talking about.
Cheers
Im looking at this one now, the one 01001010 mentioned. Its simple and if I dont like it, I can always get something else. From judgement, it looks like the winch sits at the same level the ARB would put it, only not as protected as the ARB per sae. But much more accessable, which I like.
The problem is its in the UK, and costs as much to ship it as it is to buy it, 185 Pounds + Shipping. If anyone knows anywhere closer I can buy this setup, please speak up.
I am not a big fan of Winch baskets . At that price + shipping I think i would be looking around for a decent Fab shop locally to have it made . The Design /work involved in making this is fairly simple . Worst case scenario would be having to take your D2 to get it measured and possibly another trip to make sure everything is correct before the final finish.
Cheers.
The total cost of that above mount was 300 Pounds shipped. $600CAD. I just found the e-mail. I think Im going to pick it up. But Im not so sure.
The DAP hidden winch is another option. I'd kinda like to try them all myself. But Im not made of money. I mean, I wheel alot, but I only ever needed a winch once, so far.
I have a feeling that unless your on the winch all the time, its a good setup. I mean, how often does one have to use it? I just have one incase I need it. Im going to call up DAP next and see if my XD9000i will fit their mount. It sticks up a little higher. If I get an endorsement, I'll probably buy it. The price is certainly right.
yeah. i don't wheel often, i just don't have the time or many trails (That i know of) around me. I haven't gotten stuck (yet) in the several times i've been in some hairy shit. I've always had other rigs around me (highly modified) with winches. So a setup like that would be pretty good for the occassional weekend wheeling and daily driving setup. I know its not the ideal winch setup for service or water clearance, but it keeps it looking clean/stock, and still have enough function for my moderate wheeling.

I made some calls today about the Discovery 2 Genuine winch kit/mount setup.
Its basically the 'mud shovel' design. They are unavailiable anywhere. Rovers North said they were on a worldwide backorder from the factory. The cost was qouted at $885 before freight from england, then from Rovers North to your door.
Stolen, Alak; That's the DAP one I was suggesting. The only reason I didn't buy that one myself is because I found a Warn 12k brand new in the box with warranty for 800.00. Too good to pass up. If you switch to Winchline rope instad of the factory metal line, you can use the clean aluminum fairleads, and have less weight up front. This will allow you to have an even more discreet mounting, less damage to vehicle if you have to winch at a weird angle, and less chance of injury respooling the line. Also, you can order RTE's 1 inch spring spacers, and get your normal ride height back. Be hard to notice that you had it on at all.
