I am soon to embark on an expedition to Ghana in my v8 3.5 110 hardtop Land Rover and have read that we should take a spare alternator also that if we are using high energy goods such as a fridge etc, which we are then we need the 65 amp alternator. What we were thinking was using the 45 amp one we have now as the emergency spare and then upgrading to a higher amp alternator. We also wonder whether we can use any high amp alternator, such as a 2nd hand 100 amp nippondenso or one say from a totally different make of car. So with this in mind, what alternators do you recommend and are there any special modification instructions?
Many thanks Lotty! |

I was under the impression that the 85 amp lucas was the smallest alternator used on US model Range rovers, but the later years used 100 Amp Lucas, and 110 Amp Magneti Marelli.
There are lots of writeups on using 130 AMP Bosch units, I believe as used on some VW models. |
