I was recently told by the local LR dealer that it looks like I'll need a new head gasket - no surprise - 107,000 miles on my 2000 Disco II. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with similar and any advice. They quoted about $2,200 to replace - that seems a bit high. Anyone ever replaced the head gasked by a non-LR shop? Any other issues, tips in terms of getting it done correctly would be appreciated.
Thanks, TC |

A quote on a head gaslet job can not really be known for sure unless yoou quote a really high number. By the time you pull the heads, send them out and have a machine shop inspected and repair them, valve job if needed, reinstall and replace hose, a serpentine belt and anything that was broken as part of doing the repair, you could be higher then that.
As far a dealer prices go, it is about normal but doesn't include head work if needed. A lot of people use good, experienced small Rover shops, and there are some that do their own. What ever you do, don't just get the gaskets replaced, have the heads inspected, at your mileage you can be getting near a valve job, don't put if off for a year when you can do it now and save a lot of labor. Good luck, let us know what you do and what you pay. Mike |

Thanks for the feedback. I'm having to weigh putting a lot of money into maintaining this one or possible trading up for a newer one. I know if I have a lot of work done, it will still be less than a newer Disco, but I just want to consider all of the angles. I'll let you know what I do and ultimately pay for the repairs.

Research the market, first off the dealer wont give you a good price for a trade in. I recommmend selling it privately. You get more money. At this point you can go new or used. Thats your call. Whatever you get, LR certified or else your paying extra along with your payments.
Also at this point it seems you drive alot. I would definitely recommend the eight year 100k warrantee, You can sell the car right before the warrantee ends and make some money on it. The choice between getting it fixed and having a payment is yours alone. Way your needs with your wants. |
