The Ashcroft kit is an easy bolt-in affair, although time consuming. It's cable actuated (it uses OEM 2004 Disco parts) and is less prone to failure than the DI based kits. You replace the transfer case shifter assembly with the new one, then run the cable down to the 'nipple' and there's a bracket that holds the cable in place using existing holes. It's quite simple, but pulling the centre console sucks.
Having a CDL makes a HUGE difference. I didn't think it would until I experimented with my 04- leaving CDL off, then comparing to when it is on. HUGE difference. And $500 is an AWESOME deal... AWESOME.

There is something to be said about CDL levers that are able to be actuated from the inside of the vehicle.....though as much as that would be nice, since I only use the CDL when its wet-mud or when on steep hill climbs, I would say that I will keep the $493 I saved by making my own externaly mounted, manual actuated one and put the money toward other things.

If you've got the money, and want the smoothest and nicest solution.. definitely the way to go... especially since other online vendors charge $200 more for the same kit.

But you have to make sure that you can disconnect the diff light switch when you start the car. Otherwise the traction control will switch off. There are a large number of CDL qactuators out there and most are well below $500. Most the guys on this site have CDL actuators of many different types.
