Smile CAI Installed on RRC

This Easter Sunday, I was out trying to start my other car, the 89' Ford Probe, which was my previous fixer-upper/tuner car.

Go to my CarDomain to see more.

Back on topic, since the car is not going to be driving til' I get out of college, I took some peices off of it to take home to keep em' from getting stolen, and sitting on my car was a CAI (Cold Air Intake for those who don't know rice, LMAO). I managed to actually get the thing to work on the RRC and it fit nicely, and gives the truck a little more pick-up, and the freeway mileage, I can't be more happier. I guess the chromed/polished aluminum isn't just for show on the rover, gains some benefits.

Here is how I have it setup:

That does look pretty sweet. I take it RRC's don't have MAF's to contend with??? In a few days I'll be taking the Injen off of my wifes '02 Accord, doubt it will fit on a DII though. Hers is a 4 cly and the injen has enough pipe to loacate the filter in front of a vent where a fog ligth would go in an Accord. I'd bet you could get a lot more from that CAI if you could find a way to get more cool air to it, but then that would mean no water crossing for you RRC.

No it has a MAF. first thing past the pretty chrome hose.
I really want this upgrade but I think I want to make my own and add a snorkle.

If you look closer at the picture, you will see the is a MAF, it has just been moved up closer to the T/body.
I will be interested to see if there is any actual increase in MPG.

There is a noticeable increase in pick-up and freeway mileage, like 2 mpg maybe more. I like it, and I looked it up, that intake that is one my RRC is meant for a Chevy Cavalier. Well, it fits, and that is all that matters along with the CAI benefits that comes with it.

My MAF is actually still attached to the stock intake boot, and in front of the MAF sits the CAI. I might be able to find a CAI knuckle to replace the stock intake boot with so it matches the rest of the intake. Works real well, again might be a first to see a LR with a CAI, at least that I've seen. LOL

Yeah, I don't trust my RRC to do any hard core water crossings, where the water fills the fender wells, plus my door seals are not 100% water tight. LOL

Thanks man, yeah I didn't want to leave shit just laying around collecting dust, or someone taking them, plus it was probably a good idea, to save a little bit at the pump, and I wasn't going to be able to see my Probe until much later on, so while I was there....ya know.

Does real good, and when I rev it at idle, air just gets sucked in loudly. LOL . I am also trying to design an air box (that has one panel removed of course ) that goes around the filter, so that it can interconnect with another component, like maybe a snorkel, or an airdam from the front of the vehicle to the filter, for a "ram air" affect. Still on the drawing board though. LOL

That would be cool....you could box it in like K&N..... I figured out how to build a snorkle for $30- $40 off the original intake in my RRC, but I have a feeling with that set up you'd do better than me with power!!

Maybe. With a custom enclosure of the filter, I have the idea to make the snorkel removable, for city/average driving, and then before the trail, attach the snorkle with a hole made in the hood (which would have a removable, clean looking panel) and either clip on, or snap on flush with the A pillar.

Just a concept right now, but it might be real sensible in theory.

I did the same with home made crap instead of a kit but I did this out of necessity. I needed the room for the resivoir in the stock air box location.

Things to consider, I think its AEM that has the non-oil filter that you can get to replaced the oiled filter. Would be better b/c IIRC, it filters down to a smaller micron then the k&n.

Also, a heatshield to keep the hot air from the engine compartment would be a good idea.

Yeah I hear ya on the heat sheild thing. I had one setup on my Probe, then I lost it somehow. LOL The box that I want to enclose the cone filter on mine will be easily removable for city driving, and when it is on the vehicle, a snorkel attachment can connect to it, without any leaks of course, thorugh a removable panel in the hood. Like I said about the removable panel, it will be nice looking and not crap, just flush with hood.

I am still designing it on paper, just gotta figure what material to make the snorkel, box, and removable panel out of.

Make yourself an interchangable ram intake opening on the hood. When you shut the hood it could seal against the box... the upper component could be something you could remove to fit a snorkel... but of course you would have to cut an opening in the hood. hmmm

Then again, what harm would come from just leaving the snorkel on the there full time. It would draw air from outside which is much cooler than under that hood. Put a swivel on the snorkel tip... on nice days turn in towards the front to catch more air.

Sounds pretty cool to me!

My current design has a box, with what you said about a seal for the box, when the hood is shut. and the hole in the hood has the attachment of a ram scoop, like on the Defenders, nothing too wild, and that is removable for an attachment that runs across the side of the hood, and along the A pillar for the snorkel attachment. I wish I had a scanner to show you guys, but I can draw something up on Paint, then post it, should be awesome.

Here is the design I came up with but crudely done on Microsoft Paint.

Pretty straight forward, may take time to build, but should be neat when finished.
