What exactly are the purpose of Lockers? I met a guy on the trail last weekend and he said they were a lifesaver. I know this is a dumb question, but I keep getting mixed information on what they actually are and what they do. Can someone also tell me if they would be worth it on a discoII?
Thanks a lot. ![]()

If you don't know the purpose, you're not ready for them.
Differential lockers lock your two axleshafts/wheels together so they have direct 50/50 power.. that way, when you get a wheel off the ground, power is no longer 100% diverted to that tire.. the one that has traction can push you through. Watch this video to get a better understanding: YouTube - ARB Airlocker Operation Demo With your Disco2, you also have Electronic Traction Control which acts somewhat like a locker, it puts some power the wheel with the traction.

What you should be looking into is a CDL or Center Differential Lock, your Disco already has it-minus the lever to engage it. Get the linkage from out of a Discovery 1(some guys just fashion a simple lever you can pull inside the cab) so that you can engage it and your Discovery will be that much more capable and its something to do long before you ever consider lockers.
Because your vehicle is full time four wheel drive, the differential is open front to back which is great for wet/snowy roads but once you are to uneven and more challenging terrain, you need to engage your CDL. Also, do a search on Tru Trac and Detroit locker.

Crysyn; your post is slightly misleading. 99, 00, and some 01 models have the front cap and nipple for a locking cdl. Second half 01, all 02, and almost all 03 models do not, and have to have the entire front cap of the lt230 swapped for thee one off of a correct one. A few 03, have the box back again, since they were gearing up for 04. And the 04 has the locking cdl, with interior lever fitted stock, as in the DI models.
With etc, I opted to go for trutracs which are a limited slip unit. The trutracs make up for the shortcomings of etc, and the etc makes up for the shortcomings of the trutracs. A detroit, arb, or other locker will not allow the etc to function correctly for how it is programmed to work. I did this at the advice of Bill Davis, at GBR, and have been very happy with how the truck operates off-road.

Crysyn; you are much more aware than I. Probably the typing while at work thing, huh? LOL. My apologies.

Yep. There's also a couple of tech threads floating around that show you how to wire up an override switch to disengage it. Though I don't know why anyone would want to...

No- CDL enhances traction and makes your traction control system work a lot less, but it certainly works just fine with Traction Control. I am going to go the TruTrac route over air lockers on my Disco.
Case in point, the other day I had to pull into my driveway from the side over a huge snowbank because the front of the driveway was blocked. My traction control engaged and I just spun out. I engaged my CDL, the truck crawled right over the snow bank without a hitch, no spin what so ever. It enhances traction on the trail significantly.

Thank you rmuller for the helpful YouTube video, it helped me figure out just what they do. Do you think its necessary that I do any of these upgrades? I am usually off-road on the weekends but my disco is my primary driver.
