Nothing wrong with plastic. It all depends on what you intend to do with it. Can you jump all over it, use it as a work bench or table? No, but as a storage solution, why not! Everything else in the inside of the truck is plastic, light weight, strong (sort of) and less $$$ than metal.
Currently I am working on a similar 'custom' design made from aluminium checker plate for the rear of my RRC to store all my gear when off roading, but (as always) I am concerned with weight.
