Does anyone have any suggestions on fitting a hand-throttle to a 2005 year model Defender 130?
It is used as a fire truck and spends a lot of time just sitting on idle, this leads to concerns about cylinder glazing. A hand throttle could also help when it is being used off-road as we take it into some pretty rough terrain. thanks Michael |

Central 4 Wheel Drive in Sacramento sells one for about 30 bucks. I put one on my Scout, works fine. Product Number: RBXRE1000

I can understand you wanting to use a hand throttle for idling but for off road its not recommended. Its natural to use your foot and your more likely to hit the gas and hand throttle at the same time without realizing it.
cylinder glazing will happen regardless. besides unless your sitting there operating the hand throttle constantly you will still get the effect. I would change the oil more often and run fuel conditioner more often to combat the problem. |

I guess I did not make myself clear here. The vehicle may be sitting unattended for a couple of hours with only the engine and emergency beacons operating if it is used as a traffic barrier, or it may be a control point with the two-way radios running. The kind of hand-throttle wqe are looking for is a "set and forget" type. We have them in our other three trucks [and I have them in each of my privately owned series landies] but this is the first time we have to install one in a " fly by wire" system. The TD5 engine in the 130 has a potentiometer operated foot throttle/accelerator.
We need a system to emulate this. As for the use of hand throttles while four wheel driving - they are great. Put it in low ratio, set the throttle and keep your foot off anything except the brake and you can go almost anywhere. |

Is it a deisel or petrol. Over here they are all diesels and the foot throttle is a fly-by-wire system, not a throttle cable. If your vehicles are the same, you may find it a bit difficult to fit a hand throttle.
