Unhappy Disco ignition lock problem

Periodically the key will not turn in the ignition on my 99 disco. Take it apart, unplug the wires (dealer says this keeps key from being removed while underway) and the key turns easily. Then it works fine for a month or a day. It does this with and without steering wheel turned until it's locked in place. Is there something with the steering wheel lock mechanism or key removal prevention electrics that can be freezing things up? Key is not worn. Replacement is expensive and I'll have door keys and ignition keys then. Any ex-car thieves out there who knows this lock stuff?

I use graphite in mine, every now and then, when I notice it is becoming "difficult". It has cured mine for years now. Good Luck, LRW
