Default DIY bumpers

I've been reading through the bumper threads lately and I was wondering if anyone's made their own bumper, or have pics of self made bumpers and info.

Just trying to get ideas...

If you are going to make your own bumper make sure you make one that doesn't rotate upwards like the ARB or TJM, I've seen many vehicles ruin their hoods by the bumper hitting the body.

You think 1/4 " would hold?.....if I understand the design the slider will push you ahay from the rocks...Like a haul design on Jeeps...or am I seeing that wrong!

ive been thinking about the DIY bumper too. do you think its best to start with the stock bumper mounts, or whatever?

though i think his was done profesionally, i know Disco Mike has a custom bumper that looks pretty cool:

ive been thinking that too....just seems much stronger...when it comes down to it we will probably just make a box with a support in the center. It would be cool to make the bottom out of 1/4" though......super overkill, but then you wouldnt need to have a good design or welds, etc.

What do you guys think about guys that use thier sliders to carry stuff?? such as gear oil, etc...??

Just to throw this into the mix: Has anyone used or made a winch mounth that would go above the stock bumper instead of below it, like the discreet mount?

Or maybe integrate it into the stock bumper. i.e. mount it right behind and cut the bumper to make place for a fairlead?

Btw, what really got me thinking about a custom bumper was this thread from Discoweb: custom bumper.

pic 1, and pic 2.

I've also been thinking about doing something like this to the stock bumper. Dunno, maybe it's just me, but for some reason I like it:

I was thinking of moding a Heep front bumper. Cut off the brackets and weld it on to bracket that fit the frame. I like the look of a hybrid pre-runner bumper and rock crusher style.

I will post up a pic when I get it done.

Is his front one custom too? I know the rear one is but I'm not sure his front one is. I have the pics of his rear one that he sent me.

never caught this....

lol! Are you kidding! 1/4 is nuts, its so insanely thick and heavy. You could almost just make a slider with a 1/4" plate welded to the bottom....and that would be it...actually...naw...not really, but you could with 1/2"...Muahahah!

1/2": |......|
1/4" is this much: |...|
3/16" is what most sliders and everything is made out of: |..|

(of course it would depend on your screen size for these to be even somewhat accurate.)

To add to the crazyness....its all going to be TIG welded.....

That would be pretty interesting considering you can get new Jeep bumpers cheap, and used ones even cheaper. Do you already have one picked out for the project?

I think the Jeep bumper thing is a great idea and have even toyed with the idea a few times myself. Maybe Keptin could photoshop a jeep bumper on his landy to see what it looks like since thats his gig.
There is a Jeep Junkyard close to my house (mostly early models like CJ's and stuff) I wonder if one of the old ones would work too.

I found this one on Epay and I like the look. The price is awesome as well.

I found another guy that make similar ones for Suki's and would make one without brackets so I can add my own or if I send him dimensions he will make it to fit.

I will post more info as I get it

I think the cut stock bumper is pretty cool. Although the only gain would be approach angle, as it is still the relatively weak stock bumper. No Hi-Lift points or recovery points on it.
