You really should check the SWR, since it can be effected by so many issues:
antenna location, quailty of connections, lenght of cable, quality of cable..and on and on. Radio Shack has meters.

On my CB setup, it was perfect, my friend's brother is in the Army and is a radio operator, and he has one of those units.
With my small cheap CB I got from Radio Shack, and the $24 antenna I got for it, it works to the max. ![]()

If the antenna you purchase has an SWR guarantee on it (ie, "Guaranteed SWR of 1.5:1 or better"), you can get away without checking it, but it's a good idea to do it anyway. I always put my HAM antennas on an antenna analyzer before hooking them up, to make sure everything's working properly.
And yes, if the SWR is higher than 2 or 2.5, it'll cook the circuitry in your radio. This is a very bad thing to have happen ![]()
