The name rings a bell, but I'm not familiar with the product.

Someone on here has a Surco rack. I want to say it's VArova87 (Or at least somebody in VA tht posts here).. They posted pictures a while ago with a Surco on a Discovery. I've never seen one in person but the prices on them seem pretty good.. especially second hand. As for quality.. I really have no idea though.

I have a Surco 4' x 4' basket on my RRC. It is pretty rugged and lightweight. The crossbars are as sturdy if not more so than the Thule bars I have on my VW. The only downside I have seen with mine is that it has a lot of frontal area which could cause a decrease in fuel economy, but thats true to a certain degree with any roof rack. I modified mine and added many homemade accessories like CB antenna mount, Dual canoe carrier, light mounts and High Lift mounts. The large aluminum plates on the sides, front and rear are excellent mounting points, all I did was drill a few holes and bolt some brackets up. I moved everything I had in my college dorn room with my RRC and had a mini fridge, tv, mtn bike and all kinds of small stuff, the rack was way overloaded for what they reccomended and It didn't bend or break.

I have the surco rack on the RRC I just bought from a former member here. it is 48x48 and holds weight well. I needed to put more of a floor in it as the stock bars are too wide and I wanted to put bags up there. I went to Lowes and got 2 each 12" by 48" wire shelves for the closet and zip tied them in. Now I have a strong, light floor for bags, and a more open area for camp tables and chairs, etc....Wish it was longer though, but then I would not have the sunroof acess, since my wife stands in the sunroof opening and helps load..so I guess it is great. the Yakima I had on another vehicle had more crossbars and was a sturdier floor, but with my DIY, the surco works great.
And after almost rolling the truck this weekend and using the rack to pull/push on so we wouldn't go over, it held up very well, no damages.....as for my 2 cents... |

I have one too. I am satisfied. I don't know how much the one on ebay will go for, but autoanything.com is the cheapest place i found to get one. I have a 48x60. You'll need the GM style mounting brackets that attach to your roof gutter.

I keep about 140-150 lbs up there, since I heard that was the recommneded limit from RR. My old Yakima Rack I sold to my buddy held like 300 lbs, but not a great idea. It bent the crossbars on my Chevy, so we had to make new mounts to hold the weight. The crossbars on the Surco bend down a bit, also not permanent like the previous person said, and I have put probably up to 200 lbs up there, not a problem around town. And if I could drill / mount a 3rd cross bar, that would be ideal (mine is 48x48)
I guess the big question is distribution. Spread out over the rack, the weight is better. A gas or water can, which can weigh like 50 pounds on one spot, the rack may not be as happy. Just balance out the load and take a test drive..... |
