I finally got my GPSMAP 60 in the mail yesterday and in the last 24 hours I've gone from excitement over getting my new toy and utter disappointment over finding out that I need to spend $200 just to get it to do what it says it does on the package cover.
I knew there would always be things to add on and download but I thought that the damn thing came with a decent map at least. Never in any of my research did I hear that it wouldn't come with a decent map preloaded. Anyway, I want to know what software I need to get for a city street and a topo (this is their "out-door" unit) map. I found a 2008 North America map update but it doesn't list GPSMAP 60 as compatible, (60csx, 60c are). This is a pretty popular unit so I'm guessing I'm not the only one who has had to look for this software, I'm just honestly confused which to get. Any help would be appreciated.-Hank

If you want it for giving directions around town, you are better off with a navigation system. If you want the maps for off-road and touring, you are better off getting a laptop and connecting the GPS to it. Then get the mapping software for the laptop.
I found that the GPS screens are too small and don't show enough detail when off road and touring. A laptop has a lot better display and can be used to watch movies, etc if you are stuck somewhere. |
