Garmin. Rocks.
Depends what features you want, but my 376C also is my XM tuner and has weather radar overlay on the maps. Love it.

Ahh I wish I had that feature, that would come in handy all the time.

I have the other end of the scale - as opposed to MuddyOval's sweet GPS + weather/XM set-up.

I use a Garmin eTrex Vista C on a suction cup Ram mount attached to the windshield and a power cord running to my accessory power/cig. lighter. It tracks where you have been, elevation, all the different movement functions (ETA, time to next, distance to next, overall averages, etc.). It is also battery powered for when I'm paddling, biking, walking around a different downtown, etc.

It doesn't hold a ton of maps, so I have to load the ones for where I am and where I'm going. A bit of a pain, but not the end of the world.

They had this unit marked down to 999.99 the other day at the local store. I looked at it for at least 30-minutes, then decided not to get it. I wanted it pretty bad, but then reality set in.... http://www.crutchfield.com/S-FsCxHJ9...50&I=700NAV617

Currently, I use a Toshiba laptop with the Delorme software. I've got both the Street Maps and the Topo's. Also, with my receiver, I can plug my laptop into it and play music files right off the computer. Also works really good with movies and porn.

The laptop is also nice to download your digital pics to, have a copy of RAVE on, and information like phone numbers etc... It's just a nice tool.

It's big, not really that portable, but it works great.

i do like my Garmin GPSV, but the memory on it is very limited. only 19mb. that basically loads up about half of VA. has auto routing and a bunch of nifty features. nice thing is price as it can be had for around $100 at this point. if i had a choice though ($$$), i would get a Garmin 276c. 376c would be nice, but i don't currently have XM and no plans to get it anytime soon.

If you're not out on the water, is the 276c/376c useful?

I'm looking for travel data with some potential for off-road use. Are the other more "urban" lines much different?

The 276/376 work great with topos or any of the street software Garmin has... I still think my favourite was my old 182C Marine chartplotter. Had all the search features of the newer stuff and a great display, just didn't do auto-route.
