I am in the process of installing a new skid plate. One of the heads of the bolts that is in the cross member is stripped. I've used WD40 and vice grips, but it just tears it up more. This must be removed to fit the new skid....Any ideas?

Well first off while your at Autozone buy yourself some PB Blaster....way better than WD. Anyway also while there pick up a nut cracker. They sell em in the tool section at any auto parts store. Pretty cheap and for something like that it will work perfectly. Either that or take a Dremel to the nut and carefully cut the nut. And/or put some heat to it. If you can get to the bottom of the bolt, put some heat to it below the nut then spray your PB on top. The penetrating oil will be drawn down to the heat through the threads(in a perfect world). Or go to Sears and buy yourself some nut extractors. All that is is a bigger nut with some teeth that bites into the stipped nut. A must have for any tool box.
Good luck. |

Can you get at the nut, or is this something tapped into the frame (or has a captive nut welded someplace).
If you are just dealing with the bolt head, then you can try a couple things... 1) get PB Blaster, much better than WD 2) you can cut the bolt head with an air cutoff wheel, sawzall, or even a hacksaw blade (whatever you can get into the space). Cut the head so that it has flats on opposite sides. Then use a smaller wrench to turn it. 3) Try applying heat as well ![]() |
